I recently plugged into my old 1972 Super lead and was just amazed with it. I use a Rivera Rock Crusher and old 76 4x12. Just wondering who, with all the gear and gadgets, still goes with the original.
Those old superleads are among the best for sure, although I think there are still few other amps at volume that are every bit as good and in some ways better such as my old Hiwatt DR103, which sounds bigger and more articulate and defined than any Marshall I’ve played. Not as growly or saturated and doesn’t quite get that upper mid grind like the Marshall’s, but every bit as raw sounding and the chugs on it at volume will smoke most other amps including Marshall’s. Unfortunately it needs to be even louder than any Marshall’s I’ve tried to get there. I also don’t like it for leads as much since it’s drier sounding, so I guess both are worth having in a perfect world. It also has the best cleans I’ve heard along with my ‘64 Vibroverbpanhead":2ybuwvce said:73 100 and 50 watt here. If you can play these amps at volume nothing compares except a high powered fender tweed. The original high gain amp.
