although i didn't send jimmy L a solo, figuring it would be a 10 hour song and not wanting to play up against the monstrous likes of marky/curt/ant, i tried my hand at it today using the axe-fx digital out straight to garage band:

dollar radio shack sp/dif to optical converter to mac G5/garage band->itunes convert to mp3

wicked man!

80's lick thief

tyler strat on the bridge holmes 450 pickup->cable->axe-fx plexi with tube drive pedal->stereo 4x12s with one 30 watt and one metal cab and cab air added at 2780hz->para eq cut at 160 and a hi shelf boost at 2532->dynamic delay/verb and a parallel octave below pitch shift blended in

sp/dif out of axe to 10 dollar radio shack sp/dif to optical converter to mac G5/garage band->itunes convert to mp3

That was awesome! I loved the tone from the Axe!

thanks man-i have it set up for my live sound so it's a little warm up top to compensate for bright floor monitors, but for my first crack at direct recording with it i'm stoked!

First of all, that was KILLER playing. I dug it... would stand up to ANYONE's solo IMO...

Second -I'm disappointed that you didn't submit your solo for the mix. Since when did this become a competition? I wouldn't care if Guthrie himself was submitting a solo, I'd submit mine anyway. It's all about hearing how different players approached it and having fun to me...

Steve

I didn't hear mine and I didn't get an email (although I'm the dumbass who sent the WMA file  )...were you able to use it or can I resubmit?

Right! It's not a competition, but a chance to hear each other play and to just have some fun! :) And even if it was a competition, you still should have sent it in. I'd put my solo against Paul Gilbert/Guthrie/Whoever and be happy to lose terribly!

+1 - I was hearing solos going  why didn't I think of that! I plan on learning a lot from everbody's different approach. How many times do you get to hear 26 guitar solos over the same track, where nobody heard anyone else's - pretty cool if you ask me!

James,
Thanks for doing this, it sounds like it's going to be fun to listen to. I know you are just editing and will hopefully blend the end of the solos with the starting next solo, so that should be cool.

That sounds great Pat. It could easily hang with what i sent in. Nice tones too.

You do not know how much I needed to hear a killer clip after today, and from none other than the keeper of TONE!!!!

Burned the joint down! I loved it and so glad you let loose for this one Pat.

Man I cannot wait for this to be finished, like the good old days the slingers have answered the call to bring the lost art of pure shred and holy shit the list of players is incredible

My 8 month-old daughter was literally pulling my guitar cord out of my axe and rolling all over the place whining, so I had about 20 minutes to fire up my pod and interface going into Garageband, and try to whip something together.
Oh man, kids change everything, don't they? :)
