Who was the best lead guitarist in Megadeth?

marty friedman, chris poland, and chris broderick all shred!

A Wood

hmm good question. I'd say its close between Poland and Friedman - because when I hear a song, I know its them playing as soon as I hear them.

They're the two that have the most recognisable styles. Friedman wins I think, because Rust in Peace is simply epic at times.

Actually, Kerry King falls into this bracket too, but Im not sure its as much of a style than a limitation in ability. Its instantly recognisable as excrement in any case, hehe.

Friedman's strange/refreshing style was a perfect complement to Mustaine's riffage/songwriting.

If its technical acomplishment i'd say the current guy, Chris Broderick. From what I have seen, it looks like he can play circles around the rest of them.

Im not sure if I could pick out one out style wise. Both Poland and Friedman both fitted perfectly with what Mustaine was doing at the time. Could you imagine KIMB/PSBWB with Friedman? Or RIP with Poland. Im not sure those would work...

I liked Chris Poland's style the most. he's also got the best post-megadeth work out of all of them by far with his band Ohm.

Everything Marty has done post megadeth has been a steaming pile of shit. His Megadeth stuff was great though.

Chris Broderick just seems like another shed wanker with no personality to me...

The thing that seperates Marty and Poland from Broderick is that Poland and Marty have an identifiable sound and tone. Broderick does not... He's a player along the lines of rusty cooley IMO. All technique and no style.

I don't really give a shit what he does for megadeth cause i know it's going to be an forgettable wankfest.

+1

but I'd have to say that Broderick nailed EVERYTHING dead-on this summer, it was insane to watch this guy. I dunno for composition/writing skills, but he definitively got some serious chops

Easily Marty Friedman IMO. I couldn't care less which guy is the most technical. Marty fit the band perfectly and just sounds way better to me than all the other guys.

Marty was the best, even if Chris might be the most technical player. I think Marty is the best composer by far. All IMHO :D

Marty was my hero growing up, and still is.

My entire life, people have been like, "OMGz, Poland is better than Friedman."

I just don't hear it :(

Was Cal Pitrarelli on any of the Megadeth albums?

He tears it up with Chris McCaffery in the transexual orchestra stuff

I don't care for Poland's lead playing at all.

Give the guy a chance! Who knows what he is going to pull out for the record. Some Jazz slap perhaps? Some 8 finger classical?

And let us not forget Marty Friedmans pre-Megadeth "wankfests" in Cacophany!
