Who was the best lead guitarist in Megadeth?

I think they all brought something great to the table for the time they were in Megadeth. My personal faves are Chris Poland (the solo in Devils Island, wow!) and Marty of course. I mean listen to Tornado of Souls, that is in-fuckin-credible.

For me it's Marty all the way. He's one of my all time favorite lead guitarist. His style and note choice just really does it for me.

I'm going to have to say Marty. The best way I can put it is he just fit in. Chris Broderick is an awesome player too. I really liked his playing on the Jag Panzer albums but I have yet to hear him with Megadeth.

I know Ill get killed for this but live Marty sounded like balls , Live I liked them better with Al Pitreli and Chris Broderick is totally fuggin awsum

I liked Chris Poland's style the most. he's also got the best post-megadeth work out of all of them by far with his band Ohm.

OHM flat out rocks.... Chris really shows that he has a pretty unique approach to his playing.

Friedman's strange/refreshing style was a perfect complement to Mustaine's riffage/songwriting.
IMTO - Mustaine sucks ass. Just check out his contro to the yt vid, pathetic. I think that Kirk Hammett and Mustaine should form a little band and call it Embryonic Metal Plates LobotomyX.

I have no clue as to why he's even part of the band. Poland eats Mustaine for breakfast. It aught to be good to see Poland on the 17th at Tone Merchants with his new band, OHM.

How can you be sure you would of even heard of him? Marty got his break in Megadeth.

You answered your own question in the first four words.

Mustain is like Iommi....they both write great tunes and are ok soloists. If Iommi would have hired some one to play solos instead of his noodling, that would have been cool. Without Mustain's riffs, there is no Megadeth.

Marty is great at playing medium speed solos and keeps it interesting.

in the late 90's the whole band sucked live for whatever reason?? Check some live footage from around the RIP period...they were tight then.

First of all, you're from Canada, so you don't count.

Couldn't have said it any better George. As guitar players, many of us get blinded by guitar skills versus musicianship. I think Mustaine can't sing but he writes the songs and riffs and he has more talent to do that than anyone on this forum. He's got the albums, world tours, and millions of fans to back it up.

Megadeth is Mustaine. Songwriting is infinitely more important than lead playing ability.

I don't play your trolling game.

Canada wouldn't exist if it were not for the mighty super power of the USA.

So let me reiterate - therefore you do not count! :poke:

I agree but the stuff Iommi did on the early stuff was very cool to me.
Also for what else was going on in the late 60's early 70's heavy music it is pretty cool.

I do not know about best.
But for me Mega with Marty was the stuff I liked the most.

Marty has a WAY more recognizable style than any of the other Megadeth guitarists. Anytime he starts playing, you can instantly tell it's him.

100% agree, plus, Marty's playing is never a wankfest. He is admittedly much slower than Becker and Gilbert.

Marty makes up for it with incredibly bizarre and well-voiced phrasing. I totally disagree that his "style wasn't apparent" in Cacophany.

When I hear Ninja from SMS, it`s very easy to hear what Marty does. To me, he didn`t change at all, just got structurally different songs handed to him, and had to adapt a little to that. Cacophony was a Mike Varney product, and those bands were very different in style from Megadeth. Quirky little bends, asian-inspired scales. To my ears, they`ve always been there.
