And let us not forget Marty Friedmans pre-Megadeth "wankfests" in Cacophany!

You're saying, you don't like Cacophany?

Get the hell out of here! :gethim:

seriously.

I have Speed Metal Symphony. Im not saying I dont like the band – just that Marty's style isnt very apparent. Its a bit of a notes per minute fest. If Marty hadnt joined Megadeth and kept putting out Cacophany style records we wouldnt hold him in such high regard.

Just sayin', you cant judge Broderick from Jag Panzer.

Easily Marty Friedman IMO. I couldn't care less which guy is the most technical. Marty fit the band perfectly and just sounds way better to me than all the other guys.

Pretty much exactly what I was gonna say.

I don't think Broderick fits the band at all. I really like his playing in Jag Panzer, but that's a totally different style.

 Maybe you wouldn't be holding him "in such high regard," but I sure as hell still would. His Cacophony work, and solo albums especially, are amazing, IMO.

How can you be sure you would of even heard of him? Marty got his break in Megadeth.

It's my my fault you heard of Friedman through Megadeth. I knew of him from his solo career and through Becker + Gilbert.

Marty has a WAY more recognizable style than any of the other Megadeth guitarists. Anytime he starts playing, you can instantly tell it's him.

100% agree, plus, Marty's playing is never a wankfest. He is admittedly much slower than Becker and Gilbert.

Marty makes up for it with incredibly bizarre and well-voiced phrasing. I totally disagree that his "style wasn't apparent" in Cacophany.

Cant argue with that, but Poland is equally as recognisable.

Folks, my points are:

1) Dont be so narrow minded to write off Broderick before he has even recorded a note in the band.
2) Context.

Ill spin the disc again now, but from memory only "Ninja" hints at what I consider to be Marty's style. The rest of the disc is very Shrapnel like.

I could get flamed for this, but I think Becker's stuff was very "shrapnel like". Becker had more speed and chops, but Marty just had more taste. However, Becker was what, 17 years old??? It's a damn shame about Becker :(

Broderick will never fill Marty's shoes. Those old Megadeth albums with him are legendary metal albums. Dave is never gonna write anything that tops those songs and Broderick will never play more memorable and classic solos than Marty did on those albums.

This. And I'm a big fan of Broderick, too.

You not a fan of the last 2 records? I thought UA was really good (forgiving the unnecesary A tout le monde remake), and TSHF was good to.

I do like the last two albums, but they're nothing compared to Rust In Peace or Peace Sells.

If its technical acomplishment i'd say the current guy, Chris Broderick. From what I have seen, it looks like he can play circles around the rest of them.

Im not sure if I could pick out one out style wise. Both Poland and Friedman both fitted perfectly with what Mustaine was doing at the time. Could you imagine KIMB/PSBWB with Friedman? Or RIP with Poland. Im not sure those would work...

The thing that seperates Marty and Poland from Broderick is that Poland and Marty have an identifiable sound and tone. Broderick does not... He's a player along the lines of rusty cooley IMO. All technique and no style.

I don't really give a shit what he does for megadeth, cause i know it's going to be an unforgettable wankfest.
+1 Chris is a great technical player, but I would not remember anything he does after 5 minutes. The same as Rusty Cooley and Impelletteri.

Marty is by far the best of them when it comes to writing solos. That's why Countdown To Extinction is the best Megadeth album..perfect balance on every song!

I will say that Broderick is very cool too...check out Jag Panzer's "Casting The Stones" album!

I'm inclined to agree with you, but let's wait until we hear Broderick on the new CD. We've only heard him play others material in Megadeth so far. It'd be easy to have said the same thing in 1989 when Marty joined Megadeth.

Until I hear the new one, my vote is for Friedman hands down.
