Politics ain't just politics anymore.
It's so much more about culture wars (one way or the other) than it is about any real policy issues.
If someone wants to post about LBGTQ where would it go? It that a social issue or purely politics these days.
Abortion, religion, 2A, free speech, schools and kids,...... same thing imo.

A thread could start innocently enough in the pub somewhere and then easily drift into politics.

Mods would be getting reports probably to move stuff all the time.

I’ve thought about this a lot.

On one side, I believe I remember one of the mods talk about how much work went in to separating out all of the sub categories. I also don’t know the motive behind separating them out so I figured it wasn’t my place to bring it up.

But I do think if all of the subcategories (outside of general) were put back in to one, they would get a lot more traction and views and people would contribute more.

Then in turn keep the “general” section as it is and rename it something more like “politics, religion and other shit I read on Twitter”.

Maybe yes, Maybe no. The less sub-categories the quicker threads disappear off the few first pages.
I've found just clicking WHAT'S NEW at the top of the page is an easy way to stay current.
