I'm going to get crushed for this, but for the music I grew up with and frequently play, the most innovative advancements in design and performance came from...EMG. Yes, I said it. Active pickups changed the tone of heavy music in my opinion, and raised the bar on attack and clarity for hard rock and metal.
No one is going to crush you in here angelspade. One member already voiced a similar opinion on page 1. Pickups are like microphones for the guitar, everyone is gonna have a favorite that best matches their voice.

Those two are my literal favorite pickups ever :dunno:

I'm a les paul guy though, I can understand liking other stuff if you like superstrats etc

But for les paul pickups, those two are apex mountain
What Wagner's do you like in your LP?

I've got MAD respect for EMG. Impeccable products. Absolutely impeccable.

I like all kinds of pickups; but if I'm buying passive pickups they'll be DiMarzio
Dimarzio passive for sure.. IMO King of passives (out of the big name brands) private shops different story.. I have to venture out more on the other guys I’m sure there are some special cats out there doing wonders out of their tiny mom/pop shops.

I'd also add Don Lace to that list, the designer of the original Lace Sensor pickups. I love playing Strats, and love the sound of a good Strat, but most stock Strat and vintage Strat voiced pickups back then just did not work well with high gain tones. This was the late '80s-early '90s.

The OG Gold Lace sensors I swapped into my '87 American Std Strat in '91 iirc fixed that, and still sounded like a great Strat clean and with overdrive and fuzz.

You could make the argument that the biggest pickup genius is whoever made the most money from it. So that appears to be either Larry or Seymour and it’s probably Larry since he had a head start.

I still hate the double cream patent tho and have mostly avoided for that reason.

EDIT: on second thought the money Larry made in the 70’s before Seymour got going is probably peanuts compared to recent earnings.
