Why buy ONE McCarty, when you can buy TWO?

The McCarty with the gold headstock is probably a McCarty standard. Solid mahogany with no maple cap. If there is no binding strip around the body, that's what you have.

the stock mccarty pickups are not that great...the neck pickup is way cooler than the nasal sounding bridge pickup BUT they make perfect sense in middle position. try them in the middle thump and itll be really cool. what amp are you playing through atm and what tone are you after? id reccommend some joe bardens if you want REALLY versatile and really clear pickups.. but perhaps some prs dragon pickups if you like a FAT medium output pickup. another one on your list should be the bareknuckle crawlers...huge midrange and it compliments the immense tops and bottoms on the mccarty.

Hey Thump, just keep in mind that Dragon II's are pretty loose sounding pickups. If you like tight tones, I'd stay away, personally. Haven't had much experience with Dragon I's, but I hear they are excellent. Vaughn has had experience with them.

Oh yeah Zorran, I should've mentioned that right now, I'm gigging with either a Fender Twin and pedals or a Crate V30 head/2x12" cab and pedals. I also have a Marshall DSL half-stack, but it sits at home right now.

Here's a shot I just took:

The top on that sunburst one is perfect. Congrats!

OMG! that gold one is murder with strings attached!!!!!! I see what you meant about the flame on the other one, I would not have thought that was a 10 top, but it IS beautiful. You gotta love those bird inlays,IMO, the coolest ever put on the neck of a guitar! You like those stk. Mc pup's eh? My offer is still open on that bridge pup if you want it. I would think the BBQ's would be sweet in there. I have a ltd. with dragons in it, I like 'em. They are not as hot as tremonti's, they are smoother, but I would not say they were FAT. It may be becuse the body is chambered? Not sure. Your wife is really cool to stand outside and listen while you enjoy your Minage-a twa! - HAPPY HONEYMOON!!!!!!

Maybe try a 250K vol pot instead of the 500? Dont know, haven't done that to a tremonti. Has worked on some other stuff for taming highs, for sure is a hot pup - Jim

FWIW, MOST McCarty tops are not as "fancy" looking as tops on the Customs. They also use a specific maple on McCarty's - eastern Michigan or something, if I remember right. I don't know all the the reasons, but its usually a little less flamey. From that picture, the flame looks very even all the way across the top. I assume they choose the wood for a little more vintage vibe, I'm sure Ted had some input on the type/style of the top wood as well.

PRS guitars fucking rule, especially for recording, they always sound so balanced and clear. It doesn't sound like a LP, it doesn't sound like a strat..but it just always seems like when I play one in a good mix, they sound so sweet.

Now live, I don't like them at all.

That Goldtop looks awesome!

I know its early days, but you think you are gonna keep either of them?

I love that Goldtop! I`d probably like the sound as well, I like playing a little heavier stuff than you normally do, Chris:)

I actually love the stock Mccarty PUP's! Killer PAF vibe...

As long as you keep the R8 I'll be able to respect you. ;)

I "think" it's safe to say I will die with that guitar. I've never said that about any piece of equipment before, because it never ends up being true. lol... But I feel like I can say that about the R8.

Like you used to say, I've never been able to bond with any PRS I've ever played. I can respect the craftsmanship, but I think they look like they were meant to be in photographs with semi-nude models and not to be played by men. :dunno:

I kinda like having 2 of the same guitars with totally different pup setups, Mc's are amazingly consistant from axe to axe, I feel like I can relax more, becuse they feel so familier, but fit whatever part I've assighned to them. I've had 2 of the same thing in the past, but they were totally different as far as feel goes, and I would have to adapt from guitar to guitar. Things like getting harmonics out of different guitars, are in slightly different spots on the strings { the way I get them } Never got to where I could do that without having to think about wich guitar I was playing. I did not buy both of mine with that in mind, it just turned out to be a pleasant surprise that it was the case, now I love that about them! I'll bet you end up loving that about them, wether you've considered it or not. Interesting that the gold one is all mahogany, I did'int know that about the painted ones, should be a difference you can capitalize on when selecting pup's. The michigan maple used in the top, is the same kind of maple Gibson used in the 50's, Ted spec'ed that himself. It's also known as red maple - Jim
