Why buy ONE McCarty, when you can buy TWO?

I'd try the bbq in the gold Mc. Raise the pickups a bit on the flame top and just play Allman Brothers all day! :D

Yes. I didn't like them at first but with high gain they sing pretty nicely. There are definitely better sounding medium output pickups than the stocks. I've been on a pickup chase with my Les Paul and keep going back to the 57' classics. I have some killer sounding WB's in there now but I miss the 57's sometimes. I think I just need another LP or a McCarty to put these WB's in. I'm sure my wife will be easy to convince...

I kinda like having 2 of the same guitars with totally different pup setups, Mc's are amazingly consistant from axe to axe, I feel like I can relax more, becuse they feel so familier, but fit whatever part I've assighned to them. I've had 2 of the same thing in the past, but they were totally different as far as feel goes, and I would have to adapt from guitar to guitar. Things like getting harmonics out of different guitars, are in slightly different spots on the strings { the way I get them } Never got to where I could do that without having to think about wich guitar I was playing. I did not buy both of mine with that in mind, it just turned out to be a pleasant surprise that it was the case, now I love that about them! I'll bet you end up loving that about them, wether you've considered it or not. Interesting that the gold one is all mahogany, I did'int know that about the painted ones, should be a difference you can capitalize on when selecting pup's. The michigan maple used in the top, is the same kind of maple Gibson used in the 50's, Ted spec'ed that himself. It's also known as red maple - Jim

I couldn't stop playing them last night. They are such a pleasure to play. They are comfortable, easy to play, and sound great. I'm very pleased right now!

So what should I do here? Leave the Tremonti in the gold guitar for a while, even though it's SLIGHTLY too bright (not much at all) and too hot for me? Just give it a good tryout?

I just pulled a BBQ from my Jake partscaster and put the JB back in it to prepare to sell it. I think I may put that BBQ in the bridge of the flame guitar. Thinking about the DiMarzio Virtual Hot PAF in the gold one for now. I guess there's no harm in trying the swaps. I can always go back if needed.
BBQ in the flametop! - immediate gratification. Less sure about the GT, Havent used a virt. PAF, I think I like a little hotter pup, I actually liked the tremonti, just put in a set of Aldrich's in my other Mc, alittle smoother, tight, good balance, very hot. I lik'em ! Very suprised at the neck pup - oozes vocal tones. Would probably go into hunt-gather info stage, unless you know of a sure thing, pups are so personal choice! everyone wants you to like what they like.

Curious to see how this ends up.

Can you tell which one has been played more by the fretwear?

I'm not a PRS guy but they do some great finishes. I like the gold one, shows off the body cuts. Try removing that little bright cap from the volume control, that may be all it needs to tame the brightness. That s the first thing I do if it has one.... :)

Aren't bright caps on volume controls just affecting the tone when you roll the volume down? It's the same thing on a guitar amp with a bright switch, it has no effect when your gain is on 10 but a ton when you're on '2'.

I've also heard they ever-so-slightley cut highs, even when full-on. Is that wrong?

Thats what they claim....I can tell you everytime I remove one the sound of the gtr on 10 is not as bright. Its subtle but its there.....and i hate the extra brightness that gets boosted when turning down....

Congrats Chris.

How do you like the stoptail things?
I hated them when I had a PRS, tried to install an adjustable (like Tremonti), but that was so much $$$ that I refused to and sold her . . .

If you think about it, a tone control on 10 still has a slight difference in sound with it in the circuit vs out of it.

I haven't checked the intonation with a tuner, but I have played chords all over the neck and it sounds spot on to me with .9s on both PRS guitars. If it IS spot on, I'll love the bridges! No intonation adjustment necessary or even possible.

I like the way these guitars play so much that I'm seriously considering going back to .9s on my Les Paul too. I've used .10s for a long time, but the slinky feel of .9s on the McCartys makes me want to try them again on the LP.

9's on a LP feel soooo slinky! I restrung the G0 yesterday when I swapped out the pickups to Aldrichs, had to get used to playing it for awhile, but now it plays effortlessly.

And thsoe are 2 sweet looking guitars, makes me want a McCarty now!

I love em! I have them in a few guitars now, probably my favorite pickup right now.
