Why might someone not prefer a 412?

Back when I was gigging (all of like 4 times), it was well worth the effort to load/unload my "roaring Marshall halfstack" :rock:
 
I carried 2 to 3 of them around for years.

No desire to do that anymore. 2x12's for me.

My tone is the same coming out of that p.a. either way.

If it was only the relative lack of bass in 2x12 and 1x12 cabs that makes most people think they don't sound as good as 4x12s, things would be easier. But more speakers = more phase interaction (frequency peaks and notches) between them (even using the same type) = a more complex tone, especially in the midrange. Its simple physics and not debatable. What is subjective is which one sounds best to you.

If you were mic'ing the only person who benefited was you. Still, for some, it may have been worth.
 
My friend and I were playing at his house the other day, me and my Mesa Electra Dyne 1x12 combo and his Marshall half stack. The Electra Dyne just owned the Marshall half stack. Dude couldn't believe it. The Electra Dyne is a beast.

Think so? I'm not convinced. Seems to me all that interaction behind the drivers in the air space of the cabinet would still push through the speakers. :confused:

Insignificant, especially in a live band mix.
 
Whatever cab it is that gets you in "the zone", that's what you're going to bring. You either monitor your cab, and or your floor wedge.

Call it what you will, I'm gonna ask for help to load and unload a 412. Nothing beats that feeling of pure sonic goodness. If it makes you play your best, do it.

I believe 100% in that last sentence. Even if no one else in the building can tell a difference in this gear or that gear, if it inspires you to play then you will sound better and enjoy it more.
 
I keep a 1x12 around because it's more portable, but at home I usually play through a 4x12. :D

I agree totally. If a 4x12 increases your enjoyment that much, than use a 4x12. It doesn't effect me to that extent.

I don't use floor monitors to hear my guitar and I have not used a 4x12 live now for over a year. I switched to the EVH 2x12 that tilts back. It sounds great and I have no problems hearing myself. I like being able to carry the amp head in one hand and the 2x12 in the other. The second trip is for guitar and pedalboard.

Edit: I use a 4x12 at home.
 
I dont gig....or play out. So playing anything less then a couple of 4x12's is not an option.
Yeah I play with a drummer and bass player so it would vary if I just played a tad by myself at lower volume.
would have to switch to one 4x12. ;)

Did the 1x12.....2x12's.....
nothing brings the thickness like a 4x12. :yes:
 
I use a 46lb DV Mark 4x12....sounds killer and can carry it with one hand
 
The 412 cab I use for gigging stays in a trailer :) Even at low volumes I prefer the sound over 112 and 212 cabs

I have 1x12, 2x12 and 4x12 cabs.
They all have their uses. I can manage the 4x12 just fine, but the 2x12 has both oomph and girth, so I don't feel I'm losing anything there :)

And the 1x12 has an EVM12L speaker. It rules. I want 6 more EVMs and put them into everything :D

Seems like guys who have EVMs love them. What are you playing through it, and what sorts of styles you like? I might put one in the 112 I mentioned.
