Wizard Amps: Guys swear by them, clips don't do justice. Are there any clips - even of other amps - that come close?

I think it's commonly accepted on the forums that no one has captured a Wizard amp in all its glory. Or at least, I haven't seen people posting definitive clips, most of them sound pretty similar to the other high gain amp clips that do the rounds.

Despite that, so many people swear by them on Rig Talk.

I've never even been in the same room with a Wizard, the closest was the Wizard cab half stacks (wasn't sure if they were using Wizard heads as well) at a Foo Fighters concert. Couldn't tell much at that distance.

So are there any clips people can say, "Yeah, that sounds like a Wizard"? How would you convey the sound to someone who is quite keen to separate facts from hype?

I mean, let's face it, not a lot of us want to buy an amp that no one can even mic up. And if there's pants flapping in the room, is that really the metric we want to judge our amps by, or is it tone?

Here is the infamous Reza doing a recording of the MTL MKII:

He's a pretty established Youtuber, but the tone sounds like it's farting out on the settings he's raving about at the start.

In comparison, when I hear all the descriptions tossed about on the forum like moving air and thump, I think of this clip captured with a simple cellphone:

Feel free to beat me up about that clip of a Sig:X, but I found it better than Reza's MTL demo and quite a few others of Wizard amps. Does anyone else find it close or comparable to what owners talk about?

Just wondering how to bell the cat, from the perspective of the "words don't do justice" argument.

guys on here usually tear Reza's demo's apart ....... mostly for using the cab loaded with Alnico creams

I recall @TheGreatGreen posting some killer clips of some Wizards but maybe I'm thinking of the wrong member. The Modern Classics sound amazing to my ears but I guess I've never heard them live with a band either.

Thanks man!
Here are a few clips of mine if it helps:

Just listen to the first three tracks off reload by Metallica. Left channel only. That is the modern classic in all its glory. Gutteral , throaty, growly and clear.

I always think of ReLoad when I see Wizard as I think that's what James was using on that album for a lot of his tone.

Loved the Hellrazor clip. Sounds really ballsy. Kind of like Brandon's clip in terms of the high end content. Kind of wish it wasn't just shred though and more palm muted stuff like the two mixes you posted.

Got to say, not my favourite album. I think his Mesa Boogie tones were better, though the production quality wasn't as good.

Here's one with more palm mutes I made the other day. Little bit different mix/tone/vibe but here ya go.

The Hell Razor was my least favorite in all the clips/vids I've heard whereas the MCII made me want a wizard and I'm not even a necromancer. The HR seems like a big loud beast that is too clean for what's it's designed for. Bram was super thrilled with his though so what does it matter what I think? Answer: It doesn't.

Thanks for sharing that. Can any amp cop that sound? Anyone have any examples? Maybe some boutique gear like a Larry, for example.

I couldn't really tell a difference in tone from Load to Reload. I'm not sure what James was using on Load (Mark IIC+? Dual Rectifier?). I know they used a lot of different amps on those albums, but I'm not sure what their primary amps were.

Could be the same thing I experience. Nothing really grabs me from the clips (perhaps "love" was too strong a word, but the clip was great, especially the playing) and the amps aren't talked about as much on other forums.

That said, I do trust members' taste in good gear. It's not like I have the money today or anything. But at some point of time, I'd like to definitely have one to mess with.

You can probably get close with some amps but I haven't heard anything beat a Wizard at its own game, which is modern gain that's tight with a ton of clarity and string definition but also full enough that it punches like a truck.

I think maybe a VHT Ultra Lead or Deliverance could get you sort of in the ballpark, or even a really good Mesa Mark if you really know how to dial it and maybe add some outboard EQ as well.

edit: Oh, I've heard some great stuff from Hermansson modded Marshalls and Rectos as well. Not sure how attainable those amps are but they seem to be pretty good at the super modern tones.

The other best heavy tone I've heard here was someone with a modded vintage Plexi but I can't recall who was the one who posted a video of it. It was up there next to the MCII to my ears. Amazing. Probably cost a fortune.

Member Smash has a really awesome sounding MGL amp, pretty crushing tone to my ears. Those might be worth a look. I only go off what I hear as I don't play anything resembling metal music so my insights are limited to enjoying the tones others have posted. The search is the fun part so enjoy!!!

That's shocking to me. They couldn't be more different. Go have a listen.
PS: Left channel only. Right channel is the same from Load to Reload.
