I’ve been talking about those old Portastudios a lot lately. Those are how I learned the mic a cab when I was in high school and were the building blocks of all my recording knowledge now.
Hahahah I remember when I really caught the bug, we had a 12-channel mixer in our practice space, I took all my buddy’s drum mics, plugged them in and sat there painstakingly setting the EQ as if I knew what any of those mics sounded like already or how they sounded in their positions. I had a Carvin Legacy full stack and I stuck all 12 mics all over it, thinking I’m going to get the biggest recorded guitar tone known to man, then sent the mains out the Tascam to record it in all it’s non-glory. Pretty sure I recreated a Metal Zone into a Pignose tone with so much phasing I could have put Phase 90’s out of existence, but it was a learning experience!
My buddy just found that cassette a couple weeks ago. He’s transferring all our old basement tapes into his computer. Once that one makes it into the digital realm, I’ll try to remember to post it.
