I've posted several "what speaker" threads recently and I know the speaker topic is subjective and has been beaten into the ground...

But I've been searching for a certain sound, and there are WAY too many speakers to try, so can you guys give me a brief description of some of the best ones and what they are good/bad for? I already have a 212 cab with v30's.
I also have the old Carvin 412 with generic Carvin 100 watters. I would like to replace two of the Carvin speakers to start with and run an X-pattern. The cab is front loaded, so I was thinking CL80's or G12K100's or 75's
I also would like to buy one more 212 cab and have a more vintage sounding speaker selection...Greenbacks? GH30's? Scumbacks? Any Eminence?
Thanks! -Jordan

Can't recommend a speaker unless we know what this sound is.

And what amp are you pairing it with, for that matter?

and if the 212 is an opened back or closed back cab.

Its critical to match the cab/speakers to the amp, so you are going about this the right way....

Basically like a v30, but without all the harsh upper mid spike. But still punchy and not muffled sounding.

As far as amps, for now I'm using my Dual Rectifier and Carvin MTS, but when I'm done with school I plan on purchasing several new amps(over the next few years, not at once  )
such as an Einstein, XTC, Marsha among others...

I want to dedicate the Carvin cab I spoke of to one sound(ie British or Modern metal)
and then buy another 212 and have that work well with another amp, etc...
I already have the Recto 212 for my dual so i"m set with that.
BAsically just want a good variety of tones for home studio and live use. Need to cover all bases! Thanks guys

Some variations of a V30 are : WGS Veteran 30, WGS retro 30, Hellatone 60L, Emminence Governor, Weber 12V. All sound different but also share the upfront mid response V30s are known for without as much spikiness. Though the Emminence has a sort of fuzziness I've found in other Emminence speakers so thats the last one I'd go for.

I guess I'm not explaining this well, sorry. I want a variation of cabs that I can go to when I need a certain sound.
For example,
-my Recto 212 with V30's.
-My Carvin cab with ???
-another 212 or 412 ???

So I have my V30's for that "decent at everything" kinda tone
Then my Carvin would have either a vintage speaker setup or more modern metal setup
Then I would buy one more cab for the other sound

I just don't know what to do with the Carvin. I've never bought speakers for a front loaded cab before.

I think I would go with CL80's or Mesa MC90's in the Carvin cab. CL80's work well with alot of amps in my experience, pretty modern and neutral speaker. Haven't tried the G12K-100's, that may be a good choice too.
Another speaker that I am really liking is the WGS ET-65. It is lower sensitivity, but it is a pretty smooth speaker, dark overall and has a nice warm midrange.

For the 212, I would go with 2 50Watt WGS reapers, they are G12H30 type speakers and I find those work with a good variety of vintage amps and should give you some more classic tones.
