I never heard the young Yngwie- I love how he played then! (Not very aware of his Music- once bought a cassette but it was all Viking Metal- didn't listen to it even all the way through ).

The tone ( even with poor audio on the vid ) is very nice and fluid and warm without too much gain and I like his phrasing MUCH better with longer notes and slower passages mixed in.

Vibrato and bends great- this virtuosity for a 17 year old may be unprecedented on electric guitar, and of course at that time there may have been no one at any age that could play this way.

I have more respect for him after hearing this-

Good thing I didn't hear it back then.

A true Virtuoso of the guitar and a pioneer of the Violin Tone.

Too bad he doesn't play this way now.

Amazing.

When I first started getting into him back in '85, there was NO ONE that I'd ever heard who did it that way for sure. I'd already been into Rhoads, Holdsworth, Takasaki, and Uli Roth. But Yngwie came out and as far as I'm concerned, it was he who invented "shredding" as we came to know it. Other guys had hinted at it before him, but he took it to another level. And despite the labels that his detractors have tried to pin on him since day one, he did it with style, tonefullness, and yes... even SOUL from the very beginning. He was, is, and always will be "over-the-top" to many listeners/players... but the guy is more than just a flash in the pan and has his own thing going. A listen to tunes like "Marching Out" and "Black Star" shows his depth of emotion. Or how about "I Don't Know" or "Hair Trigger" for his command of the blues. I remember being disappointed in SRV for an interview he did for GFPM way back (an "In the listening room" column) where he completely dismissed Marching Out an went on about Buddy Guy instead. Nothing wrong with Buddy Guy, but Marching Out has got plenty of soul in there to my ears as well...

I don't like Yngwie's music, but I bow to his mastery. Serious question, have there been any shredders in his wake that come close to his level of feel and musicality ?

There's plenty of typewriter shredders out there that can play faster, but most are devoid of passion, character and balls.

Personally, I don't think so. There are a lot of great ones (Gilbert, Howe, Govan, etc) who do have the mastery down, as well as lots of feel (depending on how you hear them). But IMO none have such style and tone as Yngwie. His violinesque vibrato and liquid tones are very iconic...

That's pretty incredible. That vibrato is out of this world. He's always been incredible.

Basically came in here to say that.

just remember….NO FUCKING DOUGHNUTS…..or he will UNLEASH THE FURY on a flight attendant no less

LOL^^^

But seriously, that first vid really puts to bed the notion that you gotta play .013s to get good tone, dunnit?

ITs funny how much flack this guy has taken over the years " One trick Pony, Repetitive, Overrated etc etc etc"

I just dont know how any guitar player or musician for that matter can justify trash talking YJM. The guy is a verifiable, dyed in the wool Rock Legend guitar hero. In the end, its all subjective and subject to preference but even if you cant stand him, you have to give the man his due...

Word.

The guy, more than any other, caused the "technical revolution" back in the 80s. Unfortunately, Cobain rolled it back to the stone age less than ten years later. :aww:

BTW... I am unaware of ANY of his detractors who can dog him from the safety of a superior perch. This ain't freakin' Kirk Hammett we're talking about here!

YJM is one of the few shredders I could still listen too if he could team up with someone who could write songs again....his feel, vibrato and sense of melody are excellent.

I used to be really into Vai but seems like he's just taken off the planet somewhere....

He has plenty of detractors Johnny and theyre not fellow musicians for the most part. The majority of the flack that YJM recieves is from guys who post on Music forums LOL!!!

Roger that. My "superior perch" comment would definitely disqualify 99.999999% of us music forumites! :D

usually older dudes stuck in the pentatonic boxes that chirp how boring the guy is :) I can understanding not liking classical influenced mastery but you don't rip it apart just because you don't like. I'm a post VH player and I don't care bluesy bona-fied chuck berry stuff but I don't rip all the players who play the Hendrix/SRV music, its just not my bag.
