You guys are all playing with way too much gain!

To be honest, I've really cut down the amount of gain I used over the years and it has helped my playing big time.I get a more organic tone by cutting down on the buzz.

But without all of that gain, how am I to cover up all of my flubbed notes!?

by adding too much delay and verb to the mix...sounds great until I stop playing, then it all catches up with me.

You've listened to my clips...heh and I normally run a pre and post delay as well, just in case something sneaks out...

I am glad you posted this. Because if you would have said it to me I would have never heard it due to all the ringing in my ears.

Yeah, my tastes are very differente from most guys around here, but I started here being a metal head, I loved (still do) metal and hard rock..... somewhere along the way my musical tastes changed (when I started writing music) but I already had a good atmosphere around here, I liked the folks and why leave?

I've had my share of guys pick on me but I don't mind I still find this place very cool to hang :)

You are not alone in your music tastes. There are a good many of us on here that like more than just hard rock and metal.

As for too much gain, I have found that I use more gain practicing at home. In a band situation, I turn down the gain. I also avoid using my fuzz pedal if the other guitarist is using a fuzz. One guitar using fuzz is generally enough.

Here's some gain facts:
Reb Beach: OD100se+ (now uses the PT100) Gain on 10 on the amp, EMG pickups, SPC tone control and a boost pedal.
He has a job. He gets lots of jobs. He plays on more stages than most people here.
He plays well. more weller than most.

Shaddup...lol.

This!!
I love the sweeping generalizations that come about when gain is mentioned. Here is a little bit of info for all the coliseum players here :hys:. A tone either works or it doesn't.
You can use a shit ton of gain and have it sound like ass LIVE or you can actually know WTF you are doing, play with a shit ton of gain and have people come up to you after the gig and ask you WTF you were usingbecause they were loving your tone
The devil is in the details.

All IMHO......... YMMV and more then likely will :D

I get razzed on the interwebz all the time about my level of gain. I am a live player, have been for 32 years. The last year has been the first break I have ever taken from playing live. I didn't play 3 gigs a year, I usually played 3 gigs a week.

I can't remember too many gigs where I didn't have a guitarist come up to me to compliment my tone and want to find out what was in my rig. I have had local guys copy my rigs over the years.
I am not trying to blow my own horn, I'm just saying gain doesn't have to be a bad thing. Really.

Having said that, I do like alot of lower gain stuff as well. I actually have lower gain settings for tunes in our sets as well.
You guys just don't get to hear that side :)

I knew that would get your attention :D Discuss...

What??? Too Much Gain is just like unicorns, the Loch Ness monster and fairies... doesn't exist.

Dammit. I thought gain was tone. Now I remember its volume! Volume is tone... I need to switch the knobs on my amp now so the volume knob goes to 11 to give me that little extra, instead of the gain knob...

It is only a hand-full of people that have a illusion that this forum is about "metal" and "heavy". It is only a very small piece of the whole forum. Most of us have much wider taste. The few that only see that part of it really are delusional. Sad really ....

Don't tell anyone .... but earlier this year I started turn my gain back up and scooping my midrange again. I think I went as far as I could the other direction and now only look for a balance. The right tools for the job at hand.
.... somethings just do not fit into the heads of others after the big brainwashing. Myself I like a variety of colors and textures

this is how I've noticed things are around here, just my humble opinion and observation:

most of the guys here like a lot of stuff, but its mostly rock/ hard rock, specially 80s rock and metal. But even though most guys like different styles, they get a bit "uptight" when someone like me posts something regarding pop or "bubble gum blues" ala Mayer, etc.

Again it's just how I've noticed things are around here, doesn't mean people are bad, all the contrary, there are a lot of great guys here and that's why I stay..... tastes wise I could fit better in thegearpage or something like that but I don't like the general attitude over there..... things around here seem to be takes less seriously which I like.

So it's not an illusion that the forum is about metal or heavy, but my tastes get easily picked on around here. I don't mind, maybe it's me and I'm easy to get picked on, but it'll hang because I look at the "overall picture" and it looks good full with cool people :)
