Spend time learning his music and you quickly realize how much talent Eddie had. Call it what you want, they looked the way you looked in the 80's, if you lived through it, no big deal. If you missed it, you lose. There has not been a guitar player since VH and Randy R. that successfully brought cool guitar to the masses. Everyone under 50 knows Crazy Train and Running with the Devil, the magic it took to create that kind of music is long gone, it died by 1994. Sure lots of good stuff out there now but none of it has the crossover appeal that will keep it alive for 40 years.

Ever hear of a guy called Slash? Whether you admit it or not and regardless of how good he is, he's one of the few guitar hero's left. And Sweet Child is better than any Van Halen song. What is the best VH song anyway? Throw a bunch of names in a hat and pick one.

Slash is one of my favorites and I would rank him as a game changer but not an innovator like EVH and RR. While Slash is still current, he is a child of the 80's and arguably his best work was recorded prior to 94.

Eddie V, Paul G???? Taught em' everything they know. :D !!!!!!!

To me EVH is a singular type of musician. He is instantly recognizable and sounds like no other. I don't know why people need to compare guys so much....why not celebrate the differences? Page played like himself. Blackmore played like himself. Who cares who was better? Beck, Clapton, Hendrix....they all brought something different to the table and carved out their own style of playing.....to me EVH is on another level though. He is like Stevie Wonder in the way that his chord voicings and style make him instantly recognizable and accessible. There are very few musicians / artists like them out there in the world. And yes, I love his stuff with Sammy too. He matured as a songwriter at that point and wrote some great shit that topped the charts in its day. Mass appeal - definitely. I laugh at people on here that criticize any national type level band / musician for what they do. Very few people on here are out there sluggin it out living their dreams....

Yeah, but only because I choose not to. I CHOOSE TO NOT BE GOOD!!!!!

Exactly! We don't WANT to make it look that easy when we play.

And we could be that creative / innovative in 2013 terms if we WANT to , but we choose not to freak everyone out.

We're ....too polite for that.

Finally, somebody who gets it!

Eddies rhythm playing and timing is absolutely superb ... doesn't get mentioned often.

Yes ! I used to think he was a little over rated not seeing him or his live Videos.

Then I heard his amazing solo on "Beat It ".

Then I noticed his Great sense of Time his ability to switch from Rhythm to Lead and back Perfectly...

Then I noticed how cool and creative his chord voicings were..

Then I noticed he could do all that "Live".

Then watching the Movie "Twister" at the very end credits there was this beautiful, atmospheric, wide interval,
transecendant Guitar Playing, I actually looked it up-

Eddie Van Halen.

Eh it's a point of view, not pissing on Edward, but it's all a matter of
Opinion. I grew up on VH but I didn't buy the albums.
I bought Rush instead.

I see your 3 videos of a sloppy, 2007, pre-sobriety EVH and raise you an entire show of 2013, clean and sober EVH, absolutely killing it.

Now that he's fully cleaned up he's been back on his game. The entire 2012-2013 tour, and the latter part of the 2007 tour, was on point.

Meh, I've heard hundreds of guitarists who smoke EVH technically. Usually in 30 second increments before I have to bail from sheer boredom. Now Ed? Ed entertains the ear.

Yep. Shredder's everywhere are confused as to why they never received their due respect. They could shred it up, great technique, weedly weedly like crazy, wear the garb, and confused why they did not receive their due respect, blaming it on place and timing. The reasoning was really simple...they didn't play anything worth listening to.

+1..... I really love how Eddie plays. He just has that style for me. The shredders? eh....gets boring after a few minutes.
After we me and my drummer jam out every weekend and time to kick back with some music....Van Halen 5150 is usually the first CD we always play. Not sure why...
But it all depends what I am in the mood for at the moment to listen to I guess? :dunno:

I just listened to 5150 after listening to the Sammy, Anthony, Stern interview. They played a bunch of Sammy era stuff and I had to load it up and listen. Good stuff.
