Literally just picked this up and listened to it this morning on the way to work, totally agree and I'll put them ahead of my earlier choice, these guys continue to kick ass.
You know? I really WANT to like that Ayreon album, because it reminds me so much of the 70's prog I used to love. But about 10 minutes into it, it just sounds like cheesy Andrew Lloyd Webber show tunes broadway musical bullshit.

In some sections but there's plenty of great stuff on that CD, it's an hour and half long and most songs are short. I like how some parts sound remind me of happy Hobbits running around the Shire smoking old toby and playing flutes, then comes a lead break and reminds me of 80's Euro metal, like these tracks. And for me, reading into the story of each album kinda pulls me in a little more.
My favorite album from them, or shall I say Arjen Anthony Lucassen, is Into The Electric Castle.
This track from Human Equation is cool with Labrie, Devin Townsend, Mikael Åkerfeldt, and a few others on vocals.
got a few , if i had to name just one it'd be erra , listened to it more than anything else this year
otherwise:
erra - augment
counterparts - the difference between hell and home
the 1975 - s/t
the range - non fiction
state champs - the finer things
shai hulud - reach beyond the sun
Late to the party, but for me it would be some Gojira - L'Enfant Sauvage. Although this album is technically from 2012, I didn't discover it until 2013.
I am guessing that those who are trying to like the Ayreon albums would possibly prefer Arjen's other project ' Star One' more.
While I personally love ITEC, The Human Equation was my favorite for a long time, so once TTOE gets a few more years on it I will judge it against the rest of them.
And if you all missed on Magnus Karlsson's album Freefall as mentioned on the previous page you are missing out, as he writes some killer stuff (and I am sad that he isn't writing the next Allen/Lande album)
