I don't think that I had a local hero but I definitely had my local faves!!

One was Jon Levin who is now playing in Dokken. Jon was an insane player even when he was 16. He always had a massive tone when I went to see him. To be honest with you, he is not even showing a 10th of what he is capable of doing on the guitar in Dokken compared to what he used to do when he was younger.

The second guy I used to dig was Al Pitrelli. Al was one of my first guitar teachers. Al used to be able to play metal and then go into some sick bee bop licks! Its was always very cool to see!
You guys are going to laugh but Al used to play with Michael Bolton when Bolton was rock/metal   When I was 18, I drove to Boston with a friend to go see Al play when he was in Boltons band.

Then there was John petrucci. I got to Jam with him and see him play when the band was called Majesty and I knew that they were going to get signed.
John P and John M. used to work at a local guitar store and we all used to hang out. The problem is that John kind of dropped everyone as soon as he got signed. Its a shame really.

Then there was John Petruci's friend/nemesis and a good friend of mine Named Rich Kern. Rich is an amazing player who can play his ass off. He was as good if not better the petrucci... I know that sounds like a tall statement but its absolutely true. Rich was the one who introduced me to John.
Rich kind of lost interest in shredding and kind of stopped playing that style.

LOL, that could have been my post almost verbatim!!! I took a lesson or 2 from Al but took about about a dozen or more from Petrucci..

Im going to add some other guys;

Mark Hitt-Rat Race Choir
George Cintron-Cibtron
Guitar Pete
Randy Jackson-Zebra
Pete Zizzo-I think that his band was actually called Pantera but I cant be sure. That guy was amazing when I saw him and them seemed to fade away
OF course we had Satch and Vai but I think that they had moved away by late 70's which his where most of the above were big

John "The Cat" Gatti and Mickey Marchello from The Good Rats were my local heros in Long Island growing up.

The Good Rats were an amazing two guitar band that mixed commercial hard rock with great leads, twin guitar hamonies and jazz overtones. The best album was called "Tasty" and had an incredible twin guitar instrumental called "Klash-Ka-Bob". Unbelievably underated band... Joe Franco played drums in the band and you might recognize the name from his having played with Vinnie Moore, Blues Saraceno, Leslie West, Al Pitrelli and Jack Bruce. Quite a resume...

Check 'em out live in '78:

I must have been hammered when you told that you grew up on LI bro.. BTW, its Gatto, not Gatti. Did you know that he was replaced by Bruce Kulick?

Mickey cracked me up with the rubber rats and the garbage can..

There were several. In the late seventies Riot was pretty big in the San Antonio area at the time. Mark Reale started hanging with a buddy of mine's older sister....this was around the "Narita" time frame (79). He used to show me stuff ....I was only playing a couple of years by that time. He later hooked up with several musicians from the SAT area who later went on to bigger things; Bobby Jarzombek...who played for Halford, Iced Earth, Fates Warning, among others. I took a few lessons with Ron Jarzombek who's done a bunch of things like Watchtower, Spastic Ink, and some stuff with Marty Friedman, etc. Also took some lessons from a really talented guy named John Grell from the bands WinterKat, and Liquid Sky....don't know what ever happened to him though. Somehow all that talent and greatness never rubbed off on me!

dave "the chainsaw' dipetro from tt quick
he was our evh /iommi/page/angus all in one

I wish I could say I had one...but I live in a small town and didn't know anyone that played guitar. The only guy I knew that played guitar was my first teacher, he was great, so I guess it would be him. The only bands I really ever saw were bigger bands. It wasn't till college and after I went to any clubs to see bands.

I took a few lessons from Rex Carrol from White Cross. Another was Dave Mick who played in a couple of local bands around Southern Illinois. Killer guitarist though.

Brett Garsed
Jeff Richman
Ron Eschete

back in the day:
that guy from stone heart....Curt Anderson \m/
Bart Walsh

I've always looked up to and appreciated the skills of my former guitar teacher, Eric Frehse. Dude was just one of those naturally gifted shred machines since he was young. Zakk, Gilbert and Yngwie chops galore from this guy!

We're good buddies now, and he randomly texts me cool licks and warm-up exercises to keep me on my game. Now, if only I would practice them I'd be a much better guitarist!

As stupid as this may sound, it was actually my dad. I grew up in Cleveland and my dad was the drummer in a band called the Baskerville Hounds. They were very popular in the late '60's and had several opening gigs with the Rolling Stones, Beach Boys, etc. They even played the theme to the local TV show Ghoulardi. Unfortunately, Viet Nam came along and my dad has been messed up ever since.
