If any of you guys have had any experencie with the Motor City Pickups Nasty Nasty, what where your thoughts on it? Could you compare it to the Detroiter, or possibly to another pickup? I currently have a Detroiter in a Edwards Les Paul Custom style guitar, and I have a Duncan Distortion in my Les Paul and I really like the Detroiter more, the tone of the Distortion is cool, but I really need a pickup that isn't quite as compressed, has more note separation, and a smoother/pleasant high end. I emailed Wade and he has suggested a custom wound Angel Dust, and ultimately I trust Wades judgement because he was the one that suggested the Detroiter for my Edwards and it really kills for that guitar, but I am just a little curious about the Nasty Nasty and where it sets in the MCP family. Thanks for any help guys!

I have a Nasty Nasty set in my Edwards LP and they might be my favorite medium to PAF output pickups. I love how they sound and the neck is one of the best I have. The bridge is open and has enough oomph to get into the area I like with my amp settings. They clean up nicely too.

The NN is basically a tighter Detroiter with more note separation. Wade's suggestion would also work too.

The Nasty Nasty has a very similar eq curve to the Detroiter. The differences are the NN is tighter, hotter, more aggressive, and has more string separation. The differences are noticeable, but they aren't huge. Basically, if you want a Detroiter w/a hair more ummph and tightness this would be a good choice. The NN was killer in my LP, but it can be stiff if your guitar is already really tight. I tend to follow Wade's recommendations, though. He's been spot on with each recommendation he's given me.

I can't compare it to a Detroiter, but I can compare it to a 2nd Blackbelt. It's very similar, but a little hotter, tighter, and like the entire EQ range shifted to higher frequencies. It has about the same clarity, more aggressive. The down side was the top doesn't have the same 3D quality of the 2ndDBB (which is awesome with that pup). I had the 2ndBB for a long time and the NN is the only thing that replaced it.

Wade suggested a custom wound AD for me too. Maybe he likes custom winding those.

It wasn't for me. I didn't feel it had the woody, organic thing going on that the 2ndBB had. It didn't have the clarity, either. So I sold it and picked up a NN, which at first I wasn't sure about, but as I played it more I really started to dig it. While it might not be quiet as woody and organic, a nice compromise between organic and aggressive (still more organic than most pickups I've tried).

If smooth top end is the priority, go with a 2ndDBB.

Thanks for all the replies guys! I would love to pick up a 2ndDBB but Im just afraid that it will not push my amp as hard as the Detroiter does, and I would really like something that drives the front end of it as much as the Detroiter, or possibly a little more. A little back ground info on the amp this is going to be for is a Marshall JCM 800 into a Splawn cab loaded with small blocks and big blocks. It sounds like the Nasty Nasty is kind of what Im looking for, but if the top end doesn't have that 3d quality to it that the detroiter does I would be disappointed.

No pickup I've had had the 3d top end of the 2nd DBB. I can't say the NN is as 3D as the Detrioter, nor can I say the Detrioter has the 3D of the 2nd DBB, I can say that a pickup with a less 3d top end of the 2nd DBB doesn't necessarily mean the top end sucks. :)

If you want more push than a variation of the Angel Dust might work. And what is 3D quality for a pickup? Never really understood that term for music or tone.

You know thats a good question, I guess I would describe it as a high end that is really harmonically rich, that almost has that swirl effect?! (not sure if I'm making any sense) Also when someone uses the term 3d, to me, it means that the sound it creates fills the room in a certain way that some pickups will not, I believe a lot of this has to do with compression, and note separation (which is why I find my detroiter more 3d than my distortion, even though I like the distortion), but I know that this is all subjective and depends on the person, playing ability, amp, cab, pick, alignment of the planets, etc

I've also considered 3D (for pickup or otherwise) to mean a solid sort of depth to the tone.

I associate 3D with a certain wiry little artifacts that faintly surround the notes. It there are none, the notes seem bland. Too much and it's mud.

My 81 LP has NN in it neck and bridge. That NN bridge pup is perfect for the new Bogner Red pedal. The pedal has a rich distortion to it, and it goes best of all my guitars with the NN equipped LP.

I am going to start looking for a used 2nd BB though. Have a few other candidates for that.
