I’m sure this whole topic has been beaten to absolute death already, BUT

the concept of self-defense readiness is the same as the concept of a vehicle safety belt

you don’t put on your seat belt because you’re “afraid” you might have a collision

you put on your seat belt because it is *plausible* that you may have a collision,
and collisions may have undesirable results,
therefore it is *prudent* to wear your seat belt,

even though the considerable majority of seat-belt-wearers will never be involved in a collision whose survivability depends on the seat belt

A shorter way I state that analogy is: You don't wear your seatbelt for the crashes you've NEVER been in. You wear them for the crashes you MIGHT be in.
