If all businesses are on the same playing field by paying a minimum living wage then one restaurant can't undercut their prices by the amount of staff wages to out compete another restaurant. Prices set at the restaurant for food and service then cover the wages and people don't necessarily pay more because they went up by the amount the tip (assuming the amount of the tip + the food price = the full price for a restaurant meal including wages). Then when you read a menu and see the prices you know automatically how much you are paying because the prices are transparent. You don't have to do maths in your head to work out the price.

This system works because that's the system we have here. Guess what, we have plenty of restaurants - they didn't go out of business unless they were crap of course.
It's just different systems. Your system works for you, our system works for us. Simple as.
It's ok to have different systems in different places.

But it yours doesn't work as well because:
1. You don't have price transparency and have to do mental arithmetic to work out the final price you have to pay.
2. You treat wait staff like beggers who then have to suck up and crawl up your arse in a obsequious and sycophantic way to get a tip. Vomit inducing.

I do not exhibit either of the two behaviors that you mention.

The wait staff have to basically behave like that though right? or lose tips and then they'll starve right?

Maybe everyone in every industry should be put on similar systems and see how long you can tolerate putting up with that sort of shit and the power/status imbalance.

Absolutely not in my experience, at all. We tip very well whenever we go out. Very few restaurant employees would starve since they usually get a staff meal as part of their compensation.

Again, i don't see this behavior you are mentioning. "Power/status imbalance" is one of the most ridiculous terms i have ever heard in my life regarding restaurant employees. Tipped employees have more freedom over how much money they can make, than non tipped employees do.
The system works great for motivated employees, as it has for centuries.

Notice how I'm not here saying your system is wrong BTW. Different cultures have different systems, not everyone has to do everything the same way. I've been to countries where tipping is not customary, and i thought the service was absolute garbage. But i just accepted it as part of the culture.

Funny, every country i've been to where tipping was not customary the restaurant service has been complete shit.

I can confirm that many serving staff these days don't give even standard service and they expect a tip no matter what. Look at Manhattan alone to support this. When you do get the standard service you're gushing as it's rare these days.

In my opinion the tipping era should end as it's lost all meaning of what started it. With all the unfounded self-entitlement today tipping has gone well beyond its expiry date. Of course there will be exceptions but not enough to continue the extortion these days.

If I want to give money away for free to homeless people I can and I'm not judged by the amount. Tipping for free is a whole other world of BS.

You really don't know shit about the US, do you? I'm getting pretty sick of your jealousy/anger induced comments of derangement about Americans.
Seek therapy or shut the fuck up.

It's kinda entertaining when someone who doesn't know shit about the subject insists on arguing about it, showing his ignorance more with every post. Humorous in a warped kind of way.

I toured the LST-325 down in Cape yesterday ( last tank transport ship from WW2 still sailing under its own power) then we went to a restaurant called Broussards for lunch. Service sucked, they were out of Guinness and the entree I wanted was unavailable. I still tipped the dumb bitch 20%.

Facts don't care about your feelings snowflake. I was 100% right about everything as usual.
Yeah, I'm the snowflake. You cry more than a newborn baby and Jdildo77 put together :hys:
Quit getting your facts from the corner crackhead, dumbass.

Also if what that other guy said is right and they just expect it regardless of the level of service then your system is doubly stupid. Just build it into the price like ours and forget it.
I agree with most of what you are saying, but Americans are far too entitled to really “beg” for tips so to speak, at least servers in restaurants. They know they are gonna get tips whether they put in the effort or not, so most do not.
But I will say those that have the hustle in them can do really well taking advantage of the tipping culture.

Good thing your country runs the way you like it
Yep a nice flat culture where people are fucking arrogant pricks who think they are better than others - unlike some.

Also a healthy hatred for authority goes a long way.
