Turned my PV combo into a head....

not done yet. was going to trick it out a little but what's the point....kinda rough under the tolex. any way-pretty straightforward process. Removed everything, then stripped the tolex and cut the shell. First cut was removing the bottom along the seams...next cuts were just to get the right height....Everything was great till I got fucked up and glued them together backwards. Easy fix with my vibro cutter. Just need a little wood filler (and after talking to Juggy) I think I'm going to cover it with bedliner. What do you guys think?

Not the best pictures and that was the only way I could get them to load….lol…. Nasty ass cabinet…only so many ways you can polish a turd.

Another possible option that I've been evaluating for a head conversion of my own is Duratex. Others can probably speak more to it, but I think I remember the main differences being that it will adhere better to wood, be easier to touch-up worn spots in the future, be less rough-textured, and won't be quite as rugged as bed liner, though still rugged. Possibly easier to apply? There may have been a price advantage as well, possibly only once you hit a certain volume though. If anyone has tried both, it'd be interesting to hear what they have to say.

Everything is looking as it should at this stage. Peeling the Tolex off leaves the shell looking like a mess. Like you said, some wood filler to smooth out the joint and you should be ready to move on to the next stage.

Personally, I wouldn't use bedliner. I did something similar on the first shell I "recovered". That was my Peavey Vypyr tube. I used that stone texture paint. On it's own it looked fine enough, but next to another amp or even sitting on top of a cab it didn't look good. It screamed tacky home brew. Sitting next to the 1st shell I recovered with upholstery vinyl, even with the imperfections the vinyl one looked better. I trashed the Peavey's painted shell and started over from scratch.

I don't want to discourage you from using bedliner. It is much easier to do than covering with tolex/vinyl and you may very well love the results. With my personal experience it didn't fit my tastes and wasn't to my liking. I say give covering with vinyl a shot first. Worst case scenario you waste a little money on vinyl & glue and have to peel it off and start over. At least the vinyl can be taken off to try again or try something else. If you don't like the bedliner you're kinda SOL. Once it's on there's no taking it off.

PM me if you do want to try with upholstery vinyl first. I can point you towards some sources for material, walk you through my process, and give some tips for hiding imperfections.
 
I would love to retolex it but there’s no way I could. Juggy showed me this product specifically for speaker cabs but it looks exactly like bed liner so…. I figured hit the seams with filler and hose it down…touch up the hardware and call it a day.
 
Another data point. Just came back from Speaker Repair Pros, where I was dropping off an EVM 12S Pro-Line for reconing (previous owner water damaged it or something that warped moving parts). I asked the repair dude about his experience with duratex. While he hasn't personally used it, one of his clients runs a gear rental service and switched from bed liner to duratex or maybe exohyde. When the client was using bed liner, the cabs would show up to the shop with large chunks of the covering missing. E.g., the bottom of the cab was bare from being dragged. Once he switched to duratex/exohyde the damage the shop saw when the cabs were in for speaker repair was much less severe, there were no longer large chunks missing, and the client just touched them up once a month. Now, I believe the shop said the client started using fiberglass on occasion instead. Possibly just fiberglass all the time now. Anyhow, do with that info what you will.
