Amp observations at a Metal Festival

The new Friedman IR x will change all that. That 'off' sound you describe will never be overcome in the digital world. The IR X can get plenty heavy and has all the sound and touch feel of a tube head.

I've heard that a few times before lol

I know the IR-X has two real tubes in it but it's not like it hasn't been done before. It's basically a rack preamp but in a pedal format, there have also been others like the VOX Tonelab or those Blackstar 12AX7 pedals that touted "real amp feel and tone." Anyway I'll believe it when I see it (for what it's worth, I absolutely adore the ADA MP-1 even with its flaws, through the right power amp)

I think the Blu Guitar is legit sounding, even with the Korg NuTube

I considered one, likely the Mercury Edition when I heard about the Amp X which is late...I've moved on since then. Both Amp 1 Mercury and Iridium Editions sound good IMO, and Euge compares it favorably with his favorite JCM 800.

I had a mkl 1 Herbert years back. It was an amazing sounding amp. Probably should have kept it.

It was also a great joy to carry from gig to gig. It weighed more a heavy 212! Lol!

So…. I can tell a difference between modeler into tube power amp into a speaker cab vs an actual head into a speaker cab. Never tried a modeler into a PA but that seems weak. Idk.
It just sounds too different abd ferls way way different imo

Had one, way flubby in the lows.

Had the opportunity to attend the Gates of Metal festival this last weekend and was guitar tech for Sin Quirin of Siglos (formerly with Ministry).
I was there as well, mainstage had significantly better sound through both days, not too surprising since the entire setup on the mainstage looked pretty damn pro whereas the second stage was pretty minimalist. Was the Diezel in question being used with the doom band from LA? What were your picks for bands you enjoyed?

2 of the bands were using these Friedman IRX's at the festival, one sounded good (guitarist said he literally just got in the mail, did some basic dialing in and brought it on the fly out) the other wasn't my cup of tea tone wise but the dialed in tone was intentional, killer guitar player though.

Would also be worth mentioning that the bulk of the bands on the fest were more traditional metal / thrash metal leaning, the band Fusionbear tech'd for was probably the most modern sounding band in the lineup, I think if it was more modern metal bands there probably would've been a lot more digital rigs.

The IR X can sound really bad (just like any amp) or if dialed in really really good! It's all in the hands of the chap doing the dialing :m17: (y)

Yes on the doom band from LA. When that guitarist with the Herbert riffed, it sounded so good...

I liked most of the bands, even the ones that played in the smaller stage. They all seemed to put their heart and soul into it. I couldn't recognize anyone just phoning it in so to speak.

Many of my friends played in various bands and they were good. My oldest friend plays in Anger as Art and Evil Dead (he's the drummer). We have been friends since we were 16 and play together in two other bands. I'm friends with the Steve from Anger as Art. We have played at a local church's P&W team for a few years... I was truly honored by Steve when he asked me to play (acoustic) for his dad's memorial service.

I met Sin of Siglos about four years ago and wanted to help him with their debut show. I don't tech for anyone usually...

I have an Iridium playing through my cab it sounds 100% like a tube Amp and feels 90% like one. I love it
