And Another 5-Stage "Bay Area Thrash" Langner Mod

Congrats you’re an e-celeb!

Did I catch some subtle shit-talking by Dave since the owner of the langner-modded amp didn’t like what Dave did to it, haha.

That amp had a few... odd... things done to it, to say the least. I restored it back to original Langner spec, along with a few personal updates. I think the owner is very happy now.

Got the base mod done and did some play testing yesterday. Sounds REALLY freakin' good. I'm actually blown away by how good it sounds. And that says a lot because I've built a few of these already, so the honeymoon period is long gone. Seems like each one sounds better than the last haha. But I do make small changes each time depending on the donor amp.

The amp is strong. Lots of growl, but you can dial the saturation and compression in or out at will. It's got a tight low-end but has a juicy mid-range that you can really dig into. The feel is bonkers—similar to how people describe a good Cameron. You can drive the amp into a pleasant, controllable feedback on pretty much any note or chord if you so choose.

The best part is I'm using passive pickups (Duncan Nazgul). But it remains tight and responsive. No woofiness. No brash highs. No tubbiness.

Next step is to add depth, variable NFB, and mid-shift.

No jose mod can hang with this circuit IMO...there's a lot of talk for a reason. Reza is jealous on another topic I can't understand with this design that can be had for far less and absolutely defines the metal machine.

FourT6and2 deserves all the credit for the attention to detail/support and genuine enthusiasm to research what exactly makes the Langner what it is. The end results in the past were never close enough to call them authentic but I wish every one who tried in the past to help the very very best.

Not to name names but you know who you are and maybe you're not a metal head bc if you were this would be the exact amount of gain you would want to bring with you when you make this kind of music. I thank God for this amp. I'm certainly not alone in saying it sounds incredible and easily stands tall among the few that do what it can.

Yep, this mod is THE mod for a metal player if they want that vintage Marshall platform to be the donor. This thing has so much gain, that it'll make the EVH 5153 red channel blush. But it still retains the great clarity, with awesome feel and stays tight at all times. It won't be a classic rock amp but dialing the gain back to 4, it's still in 80s land HR/Metal. So far, my 80s Marshall Vintage cabs sound killer but using GBs it gets more brutal...those are the speakers to use for the heaviest tones. Among my cabs anyway.

What other cabs/speakers have you tried?

My go-to is a Bogner 4x12 with G12H-75 Creambacks. I think Ted's G12M-25s have more snarl, but a slightly thinner mid range.

Very nice. Man I really need to try out this circuit. Seems quite different from yet another jose Marshall. I’ve never built an amp before (just moderate to extensive mods on my own modern pcb amps) so maybe I can try something like this on a new turret board amp.

I’ve wanted to build a full amp for a while just a 2203/2204 kit seemed redundant as one of my amps is pretty much modded to be a 2204 already.

Just curious but you have a different divider/cap at the input to the old V2/now V3. In the stock setup (470k and 470k//470pF) that area and that grid wire in particular is 'hot', i.e. susceptible to noise just by putting your hand nearby. But in your setup there is a cap to ground. Does that area 'cool off' with this mod?

That area is no longer the same type of circuit used in the stock amp.

It still looks like GS/CF pair with stock values, 1k on the cathode of V3a instead of 820ohm but they varied that. I was also a little surprised the .68uF cap was still there with 5 stages.

In the stock amp, you were referring to the treble-peaking and mixing circuit. Those are no longer present in my builds.

Fair but the 2204 has a voltage divider with treble peaker. The mixing circuit acts as a voltage divider for each channel. In each case, including yours it's just a voltage divider into that grid. The cap is different but it's just a voltage divider in all 3 cases.

sounds killer, to me this is what I would like a Wizard to sound like. Huge, tight, punchy.

Are you able to do these on an slp reissue?

That's high praise, thank you!

And I should be able to use an SLP Reissue. Just need to make sure there's room and if it's a PCB amp, I need to make sure I can rework the board. Turret board amps are better in that regard because I'm literally changing how the circuit is laid out, not just replacing one component with another value.
