Have you guys wondered why the gear market sucks?

It's tough out there for a seller at the moment. I struggle to decide whether to list a guitar at a good selling price so it moves, knowing buyers will just haggle it down even more, OR... list the guitar for what I think it's actually worth in the market. For example, I have an expensive high-end acoustic for sale at the moment. New, it's over $7,000. Used, others are listed for $5,000 - $6,000. I listed mine at $4,500. Of the 20-30 similar guitars on the entire internet at the moment, mine has the LOWEST PRICE. Buyers are now trying to haggle it down to $2,800. Which I'm not doing.

Same thing with speaker cabs. I had two listed recently. Mint condition Bogner 4x12 and a Mesa 4x12. Local Craigslist and FB buyers tried to haggle the price down $50, $100, etc. Silly. One guy said he'd take it. We arranged pickup time/date. Then on his way, he texts me sand says he isn't coming unless I agree to knock $50 off. I told him to get lost. Not how I like to do business. He caved and agreed to pay the agreed price. People are really trying to haggle and be petty over peanuts just to feel like they got a deal.

And before someone says oh it's just $50 or whatever, why stress about it just do it. Well, the same can be said about the buyer. If it's just $50, let the buyer pony up.

That's the entire point of the post. The seller is the one who threw a shitfit about it.

He could have just said no thanks

Funny stuff, Dan. Thanks for sharing.

I'll add my own 2 cents of one experience I had a few years ago. Not sure why this guy was interested if he considers it a piece of ___.

And honestly @FourT6and2

For as much complaining as sellers are doing about stuff not moving right now ( I don't mean you btw, I mean other dudes in the classifieds)

Thats your prerogative, but don't expect sympathy from anyone about it 🤷

Things have been WILDLY overpriced for half a decade now, and people are sick of it.

There are certainly retarded lowballers out there, and it's difficult to find a balance, buy honestly the gear market is way overdue for a correction

It's going to be a balance between supply/demand... as always. If buyers are refusing to pay and sellers are refusing to lower their prices, one of the two will have to give eventually. I'm ok hanging onto my gear if it doesn't sell at the prices I'm willing to let it go for.

I was the only person in the entire SF Bay Area with a good-condition Bogner 4x12 available. Hell, you would have had to drive to L.A. to find another. There was ONE other cab available, but it was in bad condition. I had a guy hound me on FB for a month straight. He wanted the cab. He agreed to the price and then followed up with how this other one was cheaper so I should lower my price. I said no. If this guy wanted it at that price, go buy the other one. He said no, it was in bad condition. Well buddy... if you want MY cab that's in good condition, and it's the only option available, I'm not lowering my price. There's a reason he wasn't buying the other one and wanted mine.

He got angry and then got his brother to hound me and lowball so I would eventually cave. I didn't. He got mad and started harassing me. Had to block him. No skin off my back. All of this over $100 lol.

Yeah the extortion attempts are always fun :ROFLMAO:

At least it wasn't the Reverb classic "hey UPS just dropped off the cab and it's damaged, I need a 100$ refund"

I completely stopped accepting returns at all on reverb because of that shit

The COVID boom is over, though, and all the COVID hobbyists are trying to sell their gear at COVID prices, and people are slowly becoming unwilling to pay that premium anymore, though

Not sure if over there in Australia, but here gasoline is marked all the way to 9/10 of a cent.
Especially for a used guitar :hys:

Like he's really undercutting the guy who has it listed for 1 cent higher

WHOA WE HAVE A PROFESSIONAL SELLER RIGHT HERE, HE NEEDS HIS OWN INFOMERCIAL
Isn’t it like a shitty marketing tactic from retailers? Makes the customer think it’s closer to the bottom number than the one above. Like it’s 3k, not 4K if it’s $3999.99.

I hate all that shit, but can understand it from a business. Not some tosser on the gear page lol.

I don’t even think we have 1 cent coins in Australia anymore. I don’t know, I’m the Illuminati’s wet dream and just use Apple Pay always. I’ll probably get a chip inserted if it syncs up to my playlist.

It's not a shitty tactic. It's just one of the many sad examples of the stupidity of the general public.

Who the fuck behaves like this? People are nuts.

I can only think of a few pieces of gear that I could not get rid of fast enough; most of the gear I have, I purchased it because I like it. When I decide to sell something that I like, I'm not in a hurry to sell. A few things I've pulled off the market after a few days/weeks/months after changing my mind.

I usually ignore low ball offers, some times I get annoyed if it's really low and raise the price in my counter offer. I'm rarely in a hurry to sell so I can be patient.

Would you raise the price on your counter offer, if they offered you 92% of your asking price? Asking for a friend :ROFLMAO:

The guy being discussed should have taken that offer. WIth that said, I love messing with boneheads. One of my favorites goes like this.
Say I'm selling an amp for $1,000 that I could take down to GC and walk out with $750 for all day long.

Bonehead: 500?
Me: Thanks for the interest but that is a little low. For that price I can let this one go though. When would you like to meet to do the deal?
Bonehead: (%*#*@^&)!!!!

Or sometimes I will say, sure, I can do that. Then I just ghost them for the next ten messages they send trying to arrange their score.
