I've been cheating a bit by using a volume block in there to avoid the volume knob and keep a consistent level when "rolled back".
Tone is suffering, clearly.

Seems to me that you have to put a certain amount of tension on ANY string over ANY two fixed points to be in tune.
Anything before or after those two fixed points matters not.
I'm not smart though, ...just makes sense to me.
