Love Tom! Add Billy Joe Armstrong too!

Mr. Angus Iommi Moore, the famous genetic hybrid.

I love Brian May's playing, tone and Queen are my 2nd favorite behind AC/DC but for whatever reason his style never transferred to my brain and fingers for myself.

Some of you guys are really showing your age here!

I've been on the internet for 18 years now, and that is the first time I've ever seen anyone mention him as an influence.

That's not a good thing either.

I don't know who 'him' is.

Randy Rhoads would be my #1 influence/hero as a wee lad. That being said, Gillis on Ozzy's "Speak of the Devil" was the first album that I actually started learning and playing along to. Gillis' tone on that album DESTROYED me at 13 and still does.

yep, definitely a progression for me too over the years, but the OP asked for #1 influence. Mine is Johnny Marr.

Lennon --> Page ---> Blackmore ---> Bratta ---> Robert Smith ---> Marr (been Marr for awhile now; rediscovered him)

For bass:
McCartney --> Squire ---> Butler ---> Burton ---> DiGiorgio

Songwriting:

The Beatles ---> Yes / ELP ---> Sabbath ---> Death ---> The Cure

EVH...the reason I quit drums and taught myself piano and guitar. Just wish I had taken lessons!

@ 5 years old Day Tripper came on the radio and my love afair with riff rock began. Lessons followed shorthly thereafter.

Amen brother. We must be close to the same age. I played along to SOTD and still do. It was such a fresh approach to the Sabbath catalog. You can hear every instrument clear as a bell on that recording and Ozzy's voice sounds fantastic.
It filled the void of Randy's loss to some extent. Got me thru that tough time.

Ozzy's voice should sound fantastic. I'm pretty sure he re-recorded most of it in the studio...

Yes, our ages and the level of proficiency we shot for.

My post was who inspired me to pick up a guitar, not what proficiency I shot for. Both Tom DeLonge and Billy Joe Armstrong can and rightly should be credited with pushing a massive amount of people to pick up guitars from my generation. Sorry that ruffles your feathers.
