The el34 100 watt is special, and the best of the line in my opinion. To me the best production high gain amp available.
Just for comparisons sake since we linked the vid for the 6L6 stealth, here’s Ola’s EL34 vid. I really like the mid voicing of the EL34 more but love the aggressiveness of the top end for the 6L6. I’m assuming it’s due to the dimed presence on the 6L6 though.
Can’t wait!
A lot of that is likely just how he dials them in for his style of music. I don’t hear nasally like a jcm800 but I do hear the disorganized gain like my 5150.Still has that nasally kinda mid voicing that the 5150's are known for. I don't really like that so much. Kinda sounds pre-boosted with an EQ, with the mids up really high.
Grab and go? That'll give you a hernia!I’d been watching this thing all year and got a notification from Sweetwater that they finally got them back in stock so I pulled the trigger![]()
Should be here in about a week!
I’ve always wanted another grab and go channel switcher and I like this model a lot. If you have one post some clips to hold me over![]()
Good tone and bad shoulders seem to go hand in hand these days ?Grab and go? That'll give you a hernia!
What tubes were you using in yours? I was hoping my usual selection of preamp tubes will liven it up a bit. I hate JJsHad em all, very compressed and a bit dark gain but they rock!
Those things are like 60lbs. That's the only 5150 III I'd like to have. They indeed sound good. Meaty and aggressive, for sure!Good tone and bad shoulders seem to go hand in hand these days ?
Yeah, an amp full of JJ's will certainly make anything dark. I LOVE the Tungsol EL34B's, or I'd like to hear JJ KT77's in it. I'd probably go Tungsol in V1, and an NOS 5751 in V2 for starters, for my tastes anyway. I like the sizzle of the Tungsols in V1. I've been liking the Gold Lion preamp tubes, but they haven't been too reliable. My Smallbox had 3 in it from the previous owner that were new, and 2 crapped out on me. For really dark amps, EH's do well, (in moderation). They're bright! What tubes were you using in yours? I was hoping my usual selection of preamp tubes will liven it up a bit. I hate JJs
Eddie would roll in his grave if he heard that tone coming out of one of his amps! Just saying !There is a great YT video on that amp and some secret settings that not a lot realize it has.
Had the 1/2 stack as well and sold it some time ago
He does a mix of the gains on the Blue and Red channels.
Tone Wars is the youtubber if i recall
Honestly that’s exactly what this is - I have no justification really other than a reliable channel switcher and an easy amp to use. I’ll be sure to run it against the others and see how it compares and report accordinglyHope you dig it, that's one of the few amps I keep considering buying, even though i've got zero justification for buying another high gain head.
Does the Easter eggs work on el34 EVH like on the steath 6l6 100?Eddie would roll in his grave if he heard that tone coming out of one of his amps! Just saying !
That was kind of my point. I have a Jcm 800 I run the master all the way up and the gain down dicking around and I had a 2205 30 years ago I used to do that to. Nothing new there. LOL !I much prefer the 50 watt stealth to the 50watt EL34 model. I’m normally am EL34 kind of guy but wonder if the 100watt EL34 is that much different. That tone wars video cracked me up when he claimed an Easter egg is turning the gain up and volume down on the clean channel gives you distortion…lol
Yes, on mine when on channel 3, you can adjust the gain knob on channel 2 and it acts like a tightness control.Does the Easter eggs work on el34 EVH like on the steath 6l6 100?
The tone on the new Mr Bungle are all EVH el34 100 . I love itI know a few people who have owned both 100W versions and most like the EL34. The one defining reason I went EL34 over the stealth is because I wanted a prestine clean over a dirty clean which the 6L6 stealth has. I do like the aggressive 6L6 tone but I do have an OG 5150II as well and wanted the EL34 for its like-minded up front voicing. To me the 6L6 seems more balanced but the need for a clean channel wins out in a channel switcher which is why I’m buying it to begin with. If I want just all out gain, I have a plethora of other options that can do it and better.
