Great playing. But it's nothing I haven't heard 84,656,564,564,548,144,891,564,131,464,897,489,413,132,156,676,514,561,321,020 times before. I wouldn't listen to it again because now that it's over I have absolutely no idea how the song went. Where's the hook and melody? If you are just making music for yourself then it doesn't matter at all what anyone thinks except for you. But if you are making music for other people you should work on song structure and melody. Great technique does not make great music.

No, that is not an accurate assessment. And to talk down to me about understanding fusion music because I don't think this composition is good is kinda rude when you put music up on a public forum asking for comments. I listen to plenty of fusion music, have jammed over it, understand it and enjoy it quite a bit, my friend. My comments aren't about "following rules", you are completely missing my point. It is about creating memorable song sections, melodies and soloing that flow into a coherent whole that takes the listener somewhere, regardless of whether those melodies/rhythmic changes are "outside" or not. There is a big difference between your track here and say, what The Aristocrats, or other fusion-y, jammy bands are doing. It's about the quality of the composition and, in my opinion, this needs work. Also, don't really see how this is fusion anyway - the rhythms are pretty standard hard rock stuff...

As you said, all good though...

Steve

LOL

Dude I'm not trying to create a memorable song filled with melodies, I'm just showcasing my modded Marshall's by fusing different shred guitarist's into one piece of music. Also playing solo's over chord modulation to show my improvisational ability's for others to enjoy.
I know you don't like this recording I made, I'm totally cool with that.
But the amount of people that like this recording totally outweigh the amount of people that don't like it.
So ultimately I'm very happy with the out come of this recording.
Steve I wish you the best of luck with your fusion endeavors.
LOL! I know, it's clear you weren't trying to create a memorable song - no need to explain that to me, I could hear it...

So let me get this straight. You post your "latest instrumental" called "fire breather", saying that shred is not dead "as long as it is done right musically and tastefully" and ask if we think you are on the right track. Now, when everyone isn't swinging from your nuts because you can move your fingers fast over random '80s hard rock rhythms like you expected and actually gives you real, honest feedback about your "latest instrumental", you are suddenly just "showcasing" your amp and playing solos over chord modulation. That "about face" is pretty f'n funny actually.

To be clear, I don't dislike your recording at all. I complimented you on your technical ability and tone. I gave you constructive feedback on your "latest instrumental" because you presented it as such - a song. You expected, "Dude, you rip, you're my hero!" and it's sticking in your craw that isn't what you got, so you're coming off all passive aggressive about my future fusion endeavors instead of being gracious to someone who cared enough to listen and give you some honest feedback. I will never understand why people post shit and then get pissed/defensive when people tell them what they really think...

If you had presented this as, "Hey guys, I was just wanking around on my Marshall and thought you might like to hear it." I wouldn't have said anything but "nice tones, killer chops!"...

Finally, I wish you the best of luck in learning what fusion is....

So all fusion artist and music sounds the same ??

Anyways, I'm sorry you didn't like the piece.
You've always been very kind to me in the past, so I hope you haven't lost faith me.
I'm just experimenting. ;)
Different fusion artists sound different for sure, but your music sounds pretty much straight forward rock. I'm not hearing the fusion influence.

Nothing wrong with experimenting. But you asked for opinions and seemed to become defensive when they were given to you, particularly when you insinuated it was just Steve (and anyone else) just couldn't get their head wrapped around it. I happen to agree with his critique. It just sounds all over the place with nothing that sounds like "home", so to speak. It kind of seems like different songs thrown in together.

You are a big Vai fan, all his songs have a "theme", something that keeps you grounded with the song.

Even his tunes that are just showcasing his abilities have a theme and is bound together.

Work on some structure with common and recognizable elements. Work into more fretboard arcrobatics, while beginning with something more with a hook.

Fusion? I'm having difficulty trying to comment on the original posters response to Steve.
Steve, you were being kind with your comments.

Geez man, he was just saying the song structure was a little loose and incoherent. Said you were a great player.

Oh well.

His opinion is my song structure was a little loose and incoherent. "cool"

My opinion is he doesn't understand different styles of music.

I don't see what the big deal here, it's just an opinion. :)
You don't know anything about me from the fact that I don't think your song is memorable or musically coherent. Nor did I ask for your opinion on what I understand or don't. You on the other hand, solicited opinions on your latest instrumental which apparently you weren't really ready to hear.

Sorry...

No I'm not just making music for myself, a lot of other guitarist like my stuff and are always requesting me to make more.
I do know how to write music my friend, I think at this point I should prove myself.
You don't have to listen to this other recording I made but it does make a good point. :)

 Yeah. There we go. Awesome man. I feel like the first video was out of context but it's making more sense to me now. Killer work.

I'm sorry, can someone get me Steve's hand book with his forum rules in it.

I think it started like this......

#1. Steve's always right.
#2. Don't give Steve your opinion unless he asks for it.
#3. Don't post any fusion or experimental music on the forum.
#4. etc...........etc.......

  It's hilarious that this is what you take away from what I said.

Here are your rules for providing feedback on your music:

#1. Tell me it's awesome or I'll get all defensive and passive aggressive

          ( )

Steve

I actually like it and your chops are awesome!!!    Much better than what I could do, but I agree with Steve on this being musically incoherent especially with the fade out in the beginning of a song? That said, what do I know!! :dunno: :dunno: :dunno: Steve can play circles around a lot of us, me included. I still like it though!! It is just for fun and that is what counts.

Great tone and technique. However I agree with Steve's assessment for a complete composition. I love stuff from John 5, Rob Balducci and others that still shred and prove shred is not totally dead. However outside of tone and technique this does not do anything for me.

It's just some musical ideas I recorded

Which is it?

Steve

Rule #4. Don't call a instrumental recording a musical idea or give it a name.

Sorry Steve, I really need to get a copy of your rule book.
I thought it was a fair question.

Nice revision of your original post... There was no "I'm working on" before...

Your Rule #2. If everyone is tonguing my sack, this is my new instrumental called "fire breather". If someone doesn't like it, it is just some musical ideas I recorded. If someone calls me on that, I simply edit my original post to say it's a work in progress...
