Juicy. 'Seems like you're digging it.

I've been looking into KT66's for a combo amp. How do they differ in tone from KT88's?

I find the KT66's are very bright and have a lot of top-end, going from kt66 to kt88 will give you more clean headroom and more bottom end with a different tone curve.
I prefer the KT88's most.
This isn't my amp head or I'd probably put them in. :)

Thanks. Are you using a 12AY7 for V1 like a Bassman?

No, I'm running all NOS 12AX7's in the preamp.

I prefer the higher gain of a X7.

I can switch directly between KT66 and KT88 on my THD amps. I find KT66 a bit darker and smoother in my amps. Might be the way it reacts to the particular circuits or other variables. Like the particular brand of tubes. The overall tone shape is pretty different in these two tubes.

As far as favorite - I prefer KT66 in the Flexi and KT88 in the Bivalve. Andy Marshall told me he prefers the KT66 in the Bivalve.

The Flexi kind of reminds me of a JTM45 depending on how I set it up. It can do the Plexi and Tweed stuff too. As well as the modified English stuff.

Nice work as always MichaelR/T.

I know nothing of Marshall's really. But is that what players did to get more distortion by putting an AX7 in V1 without any other mods? The Bassman schematic specs an 12AY7.

BTW, what preamp tubes are you using??

Thank you !!

I think it depends on the transformers and the amp circuit it's self.
These finding I speak of are based on the JTM45 circuits, and I've built a bunch of them for customers, the KT66's seem to sound brighter in these amps but yet still full bodied.
They sound really good but seem to lack the clean headroom like the KT88's have.

The 12AY7 have about 50% less gain than a 12AX7 so it would make sense for Marshall to use a 12AX7 in the JTM45's for a more aggressive sound.

V1 was a Philips miniwatt and the rest I can't remember.
The customer has the amp right now so I'll have to ask him next time I talk to him.

Hey Mike what Sovtek 12ax7's did you use in that 74 Super Bass amp you did? 12ax7WA's or 12ax7WB's, the amp you used the 12au7 in the Phase Inverter. I was liking the sounds of them, I remembered from years ago thinking the 12ax7WB's were dark as shit and kind of muddy but not in your video the sovteks sounded surprisingly good so I wanted to ask. THX!

That amp had Sovtek 12AX7-WB's in it.

I'm working on a 1972 Marshall Super Bass right now with all NOS preamp tubes in it.
I want to see how it compares to the '74 Super Bass after I'm finished modding it.
It should be interesting. :)

I like this one better than the last few! Seems i like my top end crunchy.. the low end is tight but with a nice squish. I really like the crispness of this one. A bit fuzzy but in a good way.

Thank you for checking out the clip.

I think this one has just the right amount of sizzle on the top-end and a balanced Plexi feel.
It's hard to keep that low-end sag crunchy and this one's got it right.
