I still have two 4X12's. I am thinking about putting a 85,V-30,H-30 and a Greenback in both cabs? Everyone I have asked did not like the idea. But I do not think anyone of them has tried something like this? Anyone mix 3 or more kinds of speakers in a cab? Why do I not want to do this? I am fine with the tone of 2 different speakers in a cab.

Never tried that, would think you would lose some definition, but I have nothing to base that on. If you dont like it, then what? would you combine 2 different sets of 2 spkrs in 2 different cabs? You know your gonna like one better than the other. seems a bit risky, just my 2 cents - Jim

Dude, you got too much time on your hands. Just play...

Right now I have one with V-30 and H-30, the other V-30 and greenback and a 2X12 with 85's. There are things I like about all three cabs. But there are times I wish the two 4X12 were the same. This also would make my 2X12 -V30's. At one time I had seven 4X12's. Keeping my favorite two.

I am too hung over to play.

Just do it.

If it's a good cab, and all of your gear sounds good, why shouldn't it at least sound cool.

Currently, I'm playing through:

four WGS BR80's
two Eminence P50E's
one Electrovoice 12S

It's one of the best sounds I've had.

Just do it. report back on the results

I recently disconneted my H&K cab from my rig because the speakers in it where contaminating the tone from my Mesa's V30's. My ears were getting confused and I didn't like what I was hearing. I can't imagine the setup you're talking about.

Are you going after a tone that you don't like?

I did this not that long ago (testing speaker combinations on each 1/2 of the 4x12 at once for a good A/B comparison) and it sounds fine. I personally think 2 types of speakers combined sounds best, but I had a G12T75, V30, CL80, and a G12K100 in my Marshall 4x12 at once at it was a pretty cool sound. 2 pairs of speakers in a X pattern sounded better to me though. But, I did turn them all on a few times to just to see what it sounded like!

I have a 4x12 with a greenback, GH30, CL80 and Mesa Cel 90 and it sounds just fine. Granted I mainly use it for recording and haven't used it loud in a band context but it never sounds odd to me. I do agree that like wattages seem to sound better in a X pattern.

I don't see why it would sound bad or would lose definition. I don't think there's any physical reason why it should sound worse than other combinations. (all the same or x pattern etc.)

If anything you'd think that it'd sound richer because you cover more frequencies :dunno:

I pluged all 3 cabs into my Sig X. Then I un-pluged the 2X12/85's. It sounded like someone turned off my sub woofer. The 85's have way more bass than the rest of them, but not the mids I like. If any of you guys have seen the speaker directivity thread on TGP, I am doing this to my cabs - it works. I well do the 4 different celestions/4X12's as I like the extra bass.

I well let you guys know what I think of the smell after I screw around with it a bit. Thanx guys.

I think I fixed it. Works for me. Anyway - the gear page - amps and cabs - speaker directivity.

you did! wow...what a great thread.

makes me want to buy some foam to try myself!

I screwed around with it a little today. Doughnut on the outside. Turn the treble and presence up a little, not much.It does what Jay said it well do.
