Had a Framus Cobra with straight stereo 4x12 last year...8 ohm V30's in Series/Parallel stock. They weren't Mesa spec but that cab sounded damned good.I am looking for another 4x12 because I have a sickness, but am currently running myself in circles….I would like to get something to compliment and expand on what I already have in both the cabinet construction as well as speakers.
Amp wise, plenty to match with: Hermanssons, Ground Zero, Lenz, Uber, Wizard…
Baritone to standard tuning. Russian Circles to Thrice to Fiddlehead to Cursive to Tool….
Currently have:
Older Marshall checkerboard slant loaded with Fane F70s
VHT fatbottom straight with scumbacks (H and J75 in X pattern)
Fryette D412 straight with Redback and V30 in an X pattern
Looking at/thinking about: Atlas, Mojotone Grand Canyon, KSR, Sound City (new Fryette version), other?
For Speakers am thinking some mix of Scumback BM75lds with redbacks or v30s, Creamback H75/m65 mix, or???
Have had a few Mesa, Bogner and Splawn cabs in the past; they’re fine but didn’t stand out to me. Obviously variations and speaker choice can play into that. Foolishly let go of the most resonant cab I found, a Framus 4x12 with V30s….seemed somewhat similar to Soldano in construction but tough to really say? Haven’t seen another one of those in the wild in years
I'd say get a Mesa OS, rewire it single jack with big wire, and put foam on the back panel. So long as it's good and broken in, that cab is going to be more musical and inspiring than practically anything else available if it's early 00's or 90's. If you've only heard the stock wiring where half your tone is going through a momentary contact jack the size of a pinhead, you're in for a pleasant surprise.
