40k to spend on gear. What would you buy.

I think I'd only pick up a couple new items;
Tom Anderson short-t
Silverface Fender Twin
Heil PR-20
Mac Book Pro

That'd be about it. And I'd have plenty left over.

I'm also torn between getting a axefx2, torpedo, or make a big ISO box to record without earning my wifes wrath.

I think it would depend on whether you have the amps you already want. If you do, then why the Axe? If you don't then it would be a big plus having the variety.

ISO cab guys I see spend most of their time trying to figure out something better. And they are hard to move, physically and in the classifieds. ;)

If you have your amps already the Torpedo is amazing.

Studio monitors, maybe a pair of sonodynes or Nuemans for a smaller footprint

might want to step up to the ensemble for more inputs and coolness factor

A desk to put all this on, two computer screens

Then you will have to decide if you want to get a few amps or go the modelling route. for modelling there is Axe II or Kemper, I currently sport the kemper and you can search out tracks that I have done. Recording direct has come a long way, and gives many amps at your disposal without the hassle of learning how to record and buying thousands in guitar gear. Going real amps is an awesome move, but then you may end up with an amp or two that you really don't like and that in itself can be years of tone chasing... so if you go amp route you will need a good cab or preferably two to get different sounds, cab really changes things. then a few mics.

preamp

are good choices looking at sweetwater alone...

great guitar is also a must, bass. for VST's I like superior with all the add ons...

a fortin meathead, natas or bones. have to play all 3 first, which would require a trip up north to mike.

a JMP NMV.
axe2 and floorboard

the 2 axes i want:

a custom BR jr
LNG universe (always wanted one since they came out)

i'd bank the rest. there's nothing parted faster than a fool and his money, esp this fool.... :)

Cort Effector guitar & Gorilla amp

Pocket the remaining $39,900

(or)

Custom guitar and amp of your choice

Pocket the remaining $30,000 and convince yourself that spending an extra $9,900 to play the same crappy Dokken riffs was necessary. :D

(or)

Buy the Cort & Gorilla.

Hire Dokken for the day

Learn a few new riffs from the "gloved one"

Pocket the remaining $39,500 :D

buy a pod and an epiphone and spend the rest on drugs and whores.

K here is my list so far. I've gota find out how much taxes is going to hit me on this inheritance first. I'm remembering inheritance tax is around 50% from non parents. But I have no experience in that.

Suhr classic strat, suhr modern Guthrie, prs pre factory 24 custom, 1958 reissue les paul (not sure on this one) suhr pt100 and cab. Axefx2 and 2k in studio monitors. Still looking at what model of monitors to get. Mac i7 apogee ensemble interface and logic. 1200 to acoustically treat the room. (need to learn more about this). Superior drummer. Fender American precision bass. I've held of from buying any of this over the last 15 years and it's pretty cool to be in a position to do this and not need the money for anything practical. Anything I'm missing? Never done any real recording outside my cheesy 4 track tape recorder lol.

This is a pretty good list!! Personally I would skip the collectible PRS and just grab a newer model...if PRS was your bag...if its something collectible you want, then get a totally custom type guitar and have it painted with your own styling by Mike Learn, Dan Lawrence, etc... Also, only spend a portion now and sock away some in order to flip to something else down the road, as once you start down this road you will be on it for a while before you TRULY find home...

I have ton of jack tied up into 4 guitars and 1 amp that I will never sell (unless the original owner really wants the amp back, then I gotta go digging)...after buying, selling, trading at least 100 guitars in the 2500 - 7000 dollar range over the last 6 - 7 years I have finally settled down and just put a stop to it. I still horse trade a little bit here and there, but for a good while the UPS guy and I were on a first name basis and shared a beer once in a blue moon..LOL To be honest, your gonna find that one or two guitars that really snag you and they could be 800 bucks or 8000...it doesnt really matter, they are just wood and string and the real difference is you.

Find out what $$ you'll have left after taxes, then fly/drive to LA (don't know where you're located) and check out the local shops (Tone Merchants, etc) to try out and hear what gear you want in person. Then make a decision.

I am looking for ideas so any suggestions would be awesome and I thought it might be fun.

I'd buy one guitar and spend the rest on more mic preamps and mics.

I agree with Jim.. I'd take a trip (s) to perhaps Tone Merchants and King Guitars to do amp research. Rob and Brad can hook you up. Play what you buy, don't go off video demos. I would have several variations of cabinets loaded with Scumbacks and Celestions. I'd go with a Suhr PT-100 for the Whomp, Soldano SLO-100 (a must) (all mods), Friedman BE-100 (Browneye grail), Friedman Dirty Shirley (JTM lust), Bogner 20th XTC ( sinful creamy dark compression), Rhodes Colossus (thunderous dynamics and great layout), Diezel VH-4, Diezel Hagan, Fortin Cali Modded Marshall, Cameron CCV-100, Fractal Ultra F/X II, Kemper (to keep those tones for late night recording), VHT 2/50/2, and a Matrix (for wet/dry/wet setups). I'd take a Suhr Andy Wood Modern over the Guthrie. I love the Tom Anderson Shorts (they punch you in the face with a hum in the bridge). Tyler's are awesome also. You also gotta have a good solid Les Paul. You would have the forum covered..  Just write me into your Will ;)

I'm having a hard time with the differences between the 58 vs 59 reissue les Paul. Is the only difference the top. Or is there actual differences in the construction. I actually like the look of the plain top better on a les Paul. No idea why. The prs I'm looking at is a 93 and isn't that much more than a new one and I love it. Small heel ftw.

Lol Greg those amps would own. Sadly after that I don't think I could afford anything to record with.

Never mind on the lespaul. Looks like I'll get a 59 reissue.

40k? Holy shit... I would spend maybe 10k and be perfectly content with a rig to last a lifetime.

I'm not a Les Paul expert..though there are many here that could answer that question more specific on the actual differences between the R7, R8, R9, and R0. I think it's all about the neck shape, thickness, and heal. Reza is a R7 player. There are many R9 owners. As far as amps go.. I'd play them all before you make your decision. Thats why I would make a trip of it. I did so myself in January between NAMM and The Amp Show. I bought a Friedman BE-100 after that. There are a few more I plan to buy also. It's what best suits you and your playing. You'll have your hands full with the home studio project also (software, mikes, preamps, etc.).. It all should keep you busy for a while :)

RME UFX - 2300
A new bass, a 7 string, a strat (warmoth), -6k or so
Bogner 4x12, Royer R121 -2500
Mic pre's and mic's for my drumset, and I'd have enough left over to pay off some bills / throw the rest in savings.
