To date, the best sounding 4x12 that I've heard is a Splawn...I liked it better than any of my Marshalls which I liked better than my old Bogner. They're priced reasonably as well.

What didn't you like about the Bogner? And what did you like more about the Marshalls. Same question for the Splawn. And were you using the same speakers in all of them for comparison?

Oh man, I'd love one of those black Orange cabs. They come with G12K's. I could use those with my Diezel in the Mesa 2x12 and throw some Greenbacks in the Orange in an X pattern. I wonder what that would sound like?

Jlbaxe, the Bogners have that padding/foam on the back, right?

I love Orange cabs with Greenies!

I hate trying to put sounds into words but I'll give it a try. First of all, they all sounded good...even though the Bogner lost out to the Marshalls it was still a cool cab.

Bogner: V30
Marshall 1: V30
Marshal 2: G12T75
Splawn: ? Whatever comes stock

Bogner was very mid focused, lacked some of the sweetness to the high end that the Marshalls had. Was tighter than the V30 Marshall but looser than the other.
The Splawn seemed more balanced across the specrtrum and had a better spread/more "3D" sound.

What amp(s)?

Just threw this demo together to give some idea of Blackbacks, amp is 78' JMP 2203 w/a clean boost [ocd.]

^ That sounds great! :) Is there a difference between 75hz G12M Greenbacks and 75hz G12M Blackbacks, though? And what is that, a 1960AV?

That is a 1978' Marshall 4x12 with small Chequerboard grill, which they don't make anywhere anymore [grill cloth], AFAIK 75 hz 70's Greenback, Blackback & Creamback were all the same, these are Rola Celestions, after the early 80's speakers & cabs went thru changes.

But any 25 watt Greenback in tandem with your amp should be a smashing success.

I prefer the sweet midrange of the 75 hz G12M.

Awesome. Thanks!

Chances are, I'll wind up with either a Bogner, Marshall or Splawn. 25 watt, 75hz G12M.

I'd hit that 70's Marshall cab.

There is no doubt, get the Marshall. I got a '73 straight with 4 Greybacks and it slays any other cab around.

So, I tried three cabs today. A Bogner Uberkab (rear loaded, new ones are front loaded) with Greenbacks, Marshall 1960 Lead (slant) with Greenbacks and a Marshall straight with G12H-30's. This last one had the checkered grill cloth and the gold 100 in the corner. And it sounded like ass. Seriously. Just awful. I don't know if it was the cab or the speakers, or both. But it was just fizzy, thin and overly "present."

The Bogner cab sound fantastic. Thick, ballsy, raunchy and had a great mid-range emphasis.

The Marshall 1960 was like a shitty version of the Bogner. Don't get me wrong. It sounded good. Just not as good as the Bogner. It had a good mid-range punch and pleasant top-end. But it was just less of everything compared to the Bogner. It also lost definition at high volumes, whereas the Bogner stayed tight and punchy.

Only thing was, my guitar developed a crazy noise problem while I was testing the cabs. Crazy squeal/feedback at medium to high volumes. Sounds like a microphonic pickup. Except it went away when I grounded out the guitar by touching the jack or switch. And it did it in every pickup position. So... until I get that sorted out, my cab hunt will have to wait. It's not the amp or anything, I tried a different guitar and it was fine.

I did have the amp's impedance mismatched on the Bogner cab, though. After the fact I realized the amp was set to 8 ohms and the cab was 16. Shouldn't be a problem though. On the Marshalls, the impedance was set correctly.

But, so far, I like the Bogner.

I dunno, I had my doubts about the Uber cab, but since you explained that its a rear loaded with GBs, not too much low end?, maybe the GBs took care of that, I am curious now to hear an Uber rear with GBs!, That G12H cab should have sounded good,,may need a little break in?? was it new or used? Do you have a specific sound you are going for?? I figured Plexi-ish so I instantly figured old Marshall cab! If its that old silvery looking LP thing you got giving you troubles I will take it off of your hands, its too old, you need a newer guitar. :D

Yeah, I thought the Uberkab with Greenbacks sounded pretty good. Much better than the two Marshalls I tried. I will never part with my Silverburst. It's mine! I loves it! It's just not working properly :(

So, Bogner 4x12 vs. Mills Classic 4x12. Both with Greenbacks. Aaaaand go.

Bogner:
Height: 30 3/4"
Width: 29 3/4"
Depth: 14"
Weight: 100 pounds

Mills:

By far the best cabs I've heard. These are the only exact replicas i know of. The boys brought down 2 4x12's last week to beat on. Ridiculously solid. I'd say these were made for Plexi's. I'm smiling ear to ear typing this. I also ran them through my Metropolous Modded Metro 50.... I gotta go play guitar

Personally I think the whole English greenbacks versus the Chinese ones is vastly overrated. They sound extremely similar to me. That said the best sounding cabs with my Marshalls has always been vintage Marshall cabs. Not sure if it's the old school construction, broken in speakers, or a combination of both, but every time I plug into older pre-80’s greenback cab it sounds amazing.
