So, I tried three cabs today. A Bogner Uberkab (rear loaded, new ones are front loaded) with Greenbacks, Marshall 1960 Lead (slant) with Greenbacks and a Marshall straight with G12H-30's. This last one had the checkered grill cloth and the gold 100 in the corner. And it sounded like ass. Seriously. Just awful. I don't know if it was the cab or the speakers, or both. But it was just fizzy, thin and overly "present."
The Bogner cab sound fantastic. Thick, ballsy, raunchy and had a great mid-range emphasis.
The Marshall 1960 was like a shitty version of the Bogner. Don't get me wrong. It sounded good. Just not as good as the Bogner. It had a good mid-range punch and pleasant top-end. But it was just less of everything compared to the Bogner. It also lost definition at high volumes, whereas the Bogner stayed tight and punchy.
Only thing was, my guitar developed a crazy noise problem while I was testing the cabs. Crazy squeal/feedback at medium to high volumes. Sounds like a microphonic pickup. Except it went away when I grounded out the guitar by touching the jack or switch. And it did it in every pickup position. So... until I get that sorted out, my cab hunt will have to wait. It's not the amp or anything, I tried a different guitar and it was fine.
I did have the amp's impedance mismatched on the Bogner cab, though. After the fact I realized the amp was set to 8 ohms and the cab was 16. Shouldn't be a problem though. On the Marshalls, the impedance was set correctly.
But, so far, I like the Bogner.
