4x12 morphed into 2x12

I had a 1960a laying around collecting dust. Put a couple plywood blanks over the holes and loaded up some Neo Creambacks I had.

Sounds great. The tight/snappy (borderline thin) Neos work really well in all that air space. Makes a cool, lightweight alternative to all my other cabs.

Did you try it out before closing off the 2 unused speaker holes. Never tried it myself, but a lot of people seem to like that detuned 412 thing.

I tried it both ways with my 1965 cabinet

It sounded better just leaving the speaker holes imo

Why lol

I have 6 other cabs. This one has speaker mounting screws broke off in some of the holes. The entire back panel screws also had to be shifted and re-drilled.

It’s been sitting in a room being used as a cat scratching post. I had 2 new Creambacks sitting in boxes……so why not? I was honestly going to put the cab in my dumpster at work until I decided to do this.

I discovered the best upgrade to my 1960B when I built my Mojotone Brit 50 Kit. I had the chassis sitting on top of the cab while I was testing it and had a big beach towel over the cab to protect it from the chassis. There was a double layer of beach towel that just happened to be hanging perfectly over the top half of the front of the cab. It sounded incredible. After testing, I put the chassis in the head shell and took the towel off and the head on top and didn't like the tone nearly as much. For a couple of minutes I couldn't figure it out and then it occurred to me to put the towel back on and there it was again. That towel is still there today.

How about turning a 2x12 into a 4x12 by converting the back panel into a second baffle board? Now that's thinking inside the box!

I have been curious about those Neo Creams. I am in the minority in that I actually prefer the 65 Watt M Creamback to the 75 watt H version. I have heard that the Neos lack a little bit of the midrange body that I like about the standard 65 Watt M version. But I bet giving them the extra space inside the cabinet to flex and move some air brings some of the fullness back. I dig these sort of off the wall experiments!

What's odd is that I don't like the M or H versions. The M was too full in the low mids........especially in a 4x12. The H was kind of the polar opposite, very hard and harsh sounding to me. I found the M usable in some scenarios, but I really hated the H.

I hear people saying the Neos are in the middle. But to my ears, they are entirely their own thing. They have a real tight/snappy poke in the high mids that sounds great with high gain.........but no harshness like the H. These are brand new, so I can see them getting little fuller with some hours on them and start moving more towards an M sound.
