Ace Frehley on Noisey....

I take it all back. KISS rules!!!

I think any band that's been around 40 years has an era that can be goofed on by someone. Aerosmith,Rolling Stones, ect, all have some moments that will give you douche chills. I guarantee any of the Numetal bands out today won't be around in 40 years.

If Ace wasn't in Kiss you would have never known him. I respect the band and what they did as a unit but I don't consider him a good guitar player. That doesn't mean that Kiss didn't have influence and break new ground in music, they certainly did and I respect that. They influenced me for the dynamic of the show and the feel good aspect.

Regarding the other players mentioned I was exposed to Sabbath and Purple and Iommi was/is my guy. I believe you are either in the Sabbath camp or the Zep camp. I am in the Sabbath camp. Not a Page fan much. I dislike Clapton with a passion. Not a Hendrix fan much. Jeff Beck is terrific and still breaking new ground. AC/DC owes MUCH credit to Malcolm although I like the whole band I feel Malcolm deserved far more credit than he ever received.

Hammet gets beat up unfairly IMO. Everybody talks about how awesome Hetfield is (and I agree fully, great right hand) but Hammet plays all those riffs right along with James.

Rant over...lol.

Lets not all forget about drugs and alcohol.....we can judge someone by a few performances when they were under the influence. Ace was no exception...when he was on he was on but fucked up??? Forget it. Remember a few years back...Eddie played horribly live...too fucked up but got his shit together....Schenker??? remember that fiasco a few years ago...couldnt play but now he has it together. Goes on and on but does that make them a shitty player? Fuck no

-define-"GOOD PLAYER"

-side note*-I saw JIMMY PAGE when he was in the band the FIRM,.. PAGE KICKED FUCKING ASS!!!

You gotta love wanna be rock stars on the internet carrying on how legitimate rock stars suck.

No one is denying that Ace is a rock star, rock god, rock soldier etc.

They're denying the fact that he may not be very good at playing that them there guitar.

But hey, he's the best damn Ace Frehley out there.

^^^That was hilarious! Love Ace. Certainly not the most technically proficient guitarist on the planet but good enough to help KISS become as big as they did and to inspire countless people including me to pick up the guitar. That's good enough for me.

How blatant was Kiss ripping off Peter Gabriel in the piece of a turd of a song, if you can call it a song? Kiss in the 80's was one of the worst bands in existence.

Do you mean Robert Palmer?

Yeah, this song and just about everything they did after Ace and Peter...

Notice how Gene can't stand Ace just being himself. The look on gene's face.. He's such a dick that he couldn't stand ace stealing his thunder.

That what I was thinking , sounds like Addicted To Love

Loved this album. Wore the cassette out. At least he isn't one of those that make me feel like selling it all

Actually, if you check out some 70's interviews with Kiss, Gene does that quite a few times.
Ace feels like a fun guy to hang out with. Gene...not so much.

Ace has been one of my heroes since the mid-70s when I was a kid. He has such a sloppy playing style but it just works. It is like Keith Richards or something. :)
I'm not stirring shit here, but Keef and Ace can't be grouped together. Whatsoever.

It's kinda like this - KISS started out as a couple of dudes from NY/Bronx when music was catching on in the 70s. You didn't have to be good, you just had to be part of the scene. KISS made a splash with practically everything BUT their music. "Wicked Lester" wasn't going anywhere - but when they added costumes, fake blood, fire breathing, morphing stage sets, pyrotechnics - ya - their shit caught on (not to mention the addition of Criss and Frehley). Are the musically talented?? Depends what your take on talent is - they did redefine an era merely by look and stage presence alone. I was a HUGE fan as a young kid. HUGE!! But it didn't take me long to realize their music was pretty low talent, and their schtick was all throttle. All show, music was secondary - worked for them. Worked for me when I was a kid.

Onto Ace as a player. No, he's not like Keef. Keef knew the blues and lived the blues and obsessed over the blues. And he's got a style unique only to him - really - only to him. I don't think he'd be able to jam too easily with anybody but the likes of Ronnie Wood, possibly Beck, Clapton, or any of the other blues specialists. And I'm not saying he's as good or comparable to those dudes - it's just he's come from a that pedigree of blues lineage. And he didn't get lucky. The Stones worked fucking hard in the early days. No show, all music.

Comparing Ace to Hammett?? Impossible. It's like comparing a Mustang to a Ferrari. We all make jokes about Hamster and his wah and all this, but that cat is a superb player, wah or not. Better than any of us here this I can guarantee. Ace? I bet there are a few dozen players if not more on this forum that could play Ace into the corner of a room with very little effort.

And for those who hate Page... Remember his heritage as one of London's finest session musicians - ever. He's one of the godfathers of electric guitar, folks. He may have copped a lot of originals in his career, but pretty well all of UK artists stole US blues and regurgitated it back to the masses in the UK and inevitably USA. It is what it is. But Page was and is a master. He may have been sloppy - but he has reached and surpassed godfather status. Respects.

Anyway - the OPs vid didn't do much for me - I think the interviewer played better guitar than Ace, but Ace has probably scored more pussy over the years so that's gotta count for something, right?
