I love a ton of mids for most things.
So do I, though I use my amps mid dial just to fine tune them because I'm getting heaps of natural mids from my four EL34's and and four V30's. Better to have too much than not enough I guess.stephen sawall":3a9bgg6y said:I love a ton of mids for most things.
Thanks a lot for the advice. One last question, do you notice any tone sucking from the THD?stephen sawall":2a0bjwrs said:I have had a few Marshall's all older than yours.
This is just one made by THD.
You well want a THD Hot Plate or something to control the volume.(A must have with this kind of amp for me.)
You can jump the channels by plugging into the bright high gain.
Then use a small cable from bright low gain input to normal high input.
Doing this well let you use both volumes. This is done on the inside of Adams amp. What is better about having it done on the out side is you can jump it different ways. (different bright and normal combinations).
Or not use it at all. You probably find the best sounds not using it.
Check out different combinations of the 10 o'clock to 3 with most amps.
Adam uses a lot of mids in his sound. Turn the mids up higher than you think. Your ear well get use to it pretty fast.
This well effect the feel and tone. You well have more dynamic range and cut threw the mix better.
Sounds good, thanks a lot for the advice. I will check out the hot plate no doubt. I don't play as low as T.V volume but i will need it for heavily over driven tones, yes?stephen sawall":1of3c4ts said:Some people like it, some do not. I really like it. I use it a lot with all my amps. It does compress and change the tone depending on how it is set up. You need to fine tune the amps tone controls when it is used to the setting on the Hot Plate.
Anything you add to the rig well change the sound. I tried all the popular ones and like it best.
On the Hot Plate turn on the deep and turn off the bright. It sounds best to me in the -4, -8 setting. But I use it down to TV volume and like the sounds I can get.
I like the amps better without it. But need to control the volume.
You need to try it with your rig.
That amp is very loud when turned up to the distortion sounds.
For sure man. I had EL34's in a JCM800 (which I just sold to a member over at TPG) and liked the EL34s a lot. I'm just no expert on tubes! I heard the EL34L bring lots of aggresion so I was naturally leading towards them. What do you suggest for the pre amps?stephen sawall":1p8c4ti1 said:Personally I like the JJ KT77 a little better. They have a better low end to my ears. The Winged C are a other good choice. I would ask around a bit. These thing change from run to run. The first pre amp tube makes the biggest difference in tone and gain. Try as many as you can here.
I do not try to cop any ones sound perfectly. As that can be very hard to do. But all of us are influenced by what others do. A lot of it comes from your hands. What kind of pick you use well have a big impact on tone.
I have seen Adam play many times. On every tour several times since Undertow. A big part of his sound comes from the volume he uses .... loud. That and he uses a lot less gain than many think.
If you watch him play most of the dynamics the band / his sound comes from his right hand. His control of dynamics is much much better than most players
I like the sounds I get better than his in this range of sounds. I did not think that was possible for some time.
Early Black Sabbath and Undertow / Aenima are the templates I use when heading in this direction.
It is only a matter of taste.
yes 100watt head, marshall g12 celestion rated at 70watts (dr db of celestion says same speaker)stephen sawall":1t2i6v88 said:The Super Bass is 100 watts ? The Vintage 30 can take 60/70 depending on the model. If you do not use a pedal in front of it to boost it should be able to handle it with all the knobs turned all the way up. Most speakers can handle twice there ratings. They just wear out a lot faster. I well not recommend you dime the thing. Try something like this .....
Bright high input.
Bass ~ 1-4 o'clock
Treble ~ 12-2
Mid ~ 10 - dime.
Presence ~ 1-4
Volume ~ 10-4 .... 11~1 has a lot of great sounds. The V30 should take this no problem. Someone blows a speaker after reading this you are on your own.
That is the sounds I use the most. It is different with different guitars and speakers. But that well get you going.
The guitar volume control with a amp like this is a very useful tool.
You can really control the sound by digging in with your pick hand.
There is a range where if you play real light it is almost clean and as you dig in there is a very good dynamic crunch. It can almost sound like glass breaking. That is the place I think of as home.
