I still love the Boogies and always will but the Modded Marshalls are just so much easier to use and they just sound killer and they are very inspiring to play.

When I started playing with the new band, I noticed that my MKIV was getting killed in a mix and I had to really fuck around with the EQ. This wasn't new to me but qfter many years of doing this it was an added HUGE PITA. I guess in my old age, Im just tired or having to tweak the EQ lol.
With Mikes Cali Modded Marshall all I have to do is literally plug in , set up my controls the way I like it and Im good to go.

I'll still continue to use the AXE-FX live because of the flexability but the Modded Marshall Mike Lent me has been my go to amp since I got it. I can't wait to get my 100 watter back from Mike and I can't wait until he gets a chance to work on my Ultimate mod lol

Well there you have it.

~R~

Everything goes in cycles, happened to me too fairly recently Ralph. Needed to take a break from the Mark series tone after 9 years. Got a few simpler/easier to dial in amps myself.

I agree. I think I was long overdue for a change. The MKIV has been my main goto amp since 92. It's not like Im getting rid of the Boogie! Ive just found another amp that gives me a tone that I dig but it's much easier to work with

but the lead channel was a letdown for me, especially the IIC+ mode.

No surprise there.

RIP Mesa Boogie 1971 - 1991

I soooooo very dis-agree. To each his own....so we can agree to dis-agree.

That said....I predict sites like this in 15 years looking back to the ole' glory days of 2009 and hailing those "original Mk Vs" as awesome amps (because they are).

God Bless opinion duels!........

Hey Ralph, would you please do me a favour and don't post one of your numerous clips this time. After so many guys raving about Camerons and now Fortins I don't need any more gas attacks of amps which may make it over the ocean not before I turn 64. Thank you.
:D

And i strongly disagree with you on the V. IMHO it's a big letdown. If they would just reissue the IIC+, but they're much too high and mighty to give us IIC+ "snobs" what we want. The Mark V manual makes Mesa seem so full of themselves but since they wrote it, i guess they are.

Not sure yet. I had an idea of where i was going but now I'm interested in sending a Marshall for a Fortin mod. So i may just be looking for a JCM800 reissue.
Are you undecided yet or suffering from double-gas, Dan?

It's just a new amp. It's not an old IIC+, and it's not the Be-All-End-All cure to the universe. It's a new amp, and a kick-a** one at that. (& who gives a damn about the manual's attitude?)

I really don't care since i sold the thing already. Ralphs Fortin clip just smokes any Mark V I've heard yet.

Ive gigged the mkV in a country and also in a rock/metal setting and it sounded as good as my 3 mk IV's that ive owned!....No, its not the holy grail of amps,BUT, if you take your time w/ it,there are very nice tone rewards in it!...and in the studio, its way more versatile than the IV or IIc+...Its making its way to some major band's cd's right now....Turn up the vol's to at least noon, and use a 4x12 cab and youll be smiling :D

Finally!!!!! :D

Cool to hear you found something that work for you even better than the Boogies Ralph. Looking forward to hearing more clips from you with Mikes amps.

Holy cow, everyone is dumping their mesa mark series amps. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, things go in cycles. Not many musicians use the same gear throughout there career, so its not surprising. Sorry you guys are jumping ship from the mark series, however I totally understand, which is why I have my trusty marshall 2553, but the mark IVA is going nowhere, unless I get a mark V or maybe an Axe-Fx, then its in trouble.... :D

I've been using the same Guytron GT100 since 2004... and have no intention whatsoever to sell it. Even after playing most of the "mainstream" boutique amps, nothing has really ever made me second guess it (though J.B.'s Cameron modded Plexi and Bill Landry's amps come very, very close). For me it's all about FX these days... I've even given up with new guitars since the Legacy can pull off most tones I need (with an Ibanez RG570 to do the in-between Strat sounds in case I should need 'em).

What I love about the GT100 is that I don't have to dick around with the settings for an hour to get something that sounds great. Heck, just about ANY setting sounds great; it just depends on the sound you're looking for. I used to be a tweaker, but now I just want to play :) I think that's the main reason Boogies don't appeal to me.

What is it with old people and Marshalls?

And Teles!

I think of the Mark V as having a better channel 2 than the Mark IV, but a lead channel that isn't as good, and the clean on the IV was good enough. It's got a few more bells and whistles than the IV but i think that by Boogie to slap a IIC+ mode on there is just to take advantage of people that can't find a IIC+, or can't afford one because it doesn't sound like a IIC+.

Decent amp? Sure, but not worth $2000 especially since it's lead channel isn't any better than what's on the IV.

By 2024 all Mesa amps will be digital & feature their new, proprietary, & developed in conjunction with Intel "dyna-chip" technology that creates "lusicious harmonic spread", accurately producing the "angelic overtones" of their fabled STR 415 tubes of yesteryear.

Maybe I can get a job writing Mesa advertisements :D

Hey Ralph!

I did the exact same thing at the beginning of this year.. Im using my own modded Marshall now as my main amp, and i sold off my Boogie MKIII because the modded Marshalls just do it better for me in every situation.

I was fighting my MKIII in a band situation, and it just wouldnt cut through unless i turned up the mid slider on the EQ atleast to the middle line.. at which point it sounded too middy and i didnt like the tone. With the modded Marshalls, i can set it up in 5 seconds and i can get the tone EXACTLY how i want, and it cuts like glass in a band mix!!

It was a total no brainer for me to just stick with the modded Marshalls and quit using the Boogie. Glad its worked out for you man!!

Your own-modded Marshall is the dog`s bollocks, man. Or should I say the mutt`s nuts. The bees knees!! :D

(I hope those are positive expressions, because I think it sounds GREAT)
I hardly get to play anything but acoustic guitar and bass nowadays, so the Caliber .50+ will remain my only (tube) amp for now. I`m really hoping to be able to score a Folkesson-modded Marshall down the road, if I ever join a band as a guitarist again :)

Yeah those Folkesson modded Marshalls sound insane, i still regard Harry Cody's tone on Shotgun Messiah's Second Coming CD as one of the best tones ever recorded!!
