I saw Van Cherone live (my only Van Halen concert ever). Kenny Wayne Shepard opened and really tore the house down. I thought Gary Cherone had a great voice and VH sounded badass
The Cherone shows are fucking amazing online . I wish they would release the second album with gar bear .

He wasn't just "a vocalist", he was a perfect front man and song writer. In the same vein as Johnny Rotten or Joey Ramone.

Sammy Hagar gave Van Halen vocal gonorrhea.
Dude why the Sammy hate

hagar was a known rock personality so i get how the general populous embraced van hagar as the music morphed into pop rock.

but that trick only goes so far

Fair Warning
VH1
5150
FUCK
OU812
1984
VH2
Diver Down
Women and Children
VHIII
Balance
ADKOT(terrible)

I saw VH in 1978 open for Black Sabbath on their Never Say Die tour; and headlining for VHII the following year or whenever it was. None of us in Connecticut ever heard of VH. Within days of that Sabbath show I went to the local indy record store, they had two copies of VH1, I bought one.

My list:

VH1
VH2
WACF
Fair Warning
Diver Down
1984

never liked Van Hagar other than a few songs;

EVH was always great, but never liked Hagar...still don't. Hagar's a talented guy, just not something I like; same goes for Brian Johnson (AC/DC) - I can only listen to his screeching in small doses; worse than nails on a chalkboard to me.

I can't speak for Geo and I don't hate Hagar but his entrance into VH really started my dislike for him. And oddly I was somewhat into some of his solo stuff but once he started shitting on Roth and their past music, no bueno.

Yeah I get it, Alex and Ed were pissed at Roth but Sam had no play in that game and yet he's bashing the guy in those early interviews along with Ed and Al. At best Hagar was a B level act, steps into what at that time was the biggest band in the world coming off two years of 1984 era and he's throwing attitude at the guy he replaced? That shit rubbed me the wrong way.

And he stills runs his yap to this day. There's never an interview with Sam where he doesn't remind you he was in Van Halen or he's got a bone to pick with Al or Dave. Then straight up lies about the record sales claiming VH was bigger with him than Roth, the sales numbers don't lie, Roth era sold way more yet there he is pushing his propaganda. And what does he care, he's richer than any of them from the sale of his tequila brand.

That said, I loved FUCK and like much of 5150 but for me, Sam's an easy guy to dislike.

As I've always said, Van Halen with Roth was the party, Van Halen with Hagar was just the band at the party. Van Halen with Roth was summer at the lake, the beach, chilling around the pool, some tasty waves and a cool buzz, cruising your Trans Am, drinking with your buds and trying/getting laid, Van Halen with Hagar was having her home by 10.

I have mixed feelings about Diver Down. The covers are annoying, but I love the original tracks on it. Little Guitars and Secrets are easily some of my favorite VH tracks in their entire catalog.

VH1
Diver Down
The two "new songs" on the greatest hits album
ADKOT

Don't care about the rest.

Dave and Sammy both seem to have a personality that is both EASY to dislike and charismatic enough that they pull you in. They been spitting vitriol at each other for over 40 years at this point. They both have what I like to refer to as FMS (front man syndrome). Ego beyond control.

I fall into the camp that I prefer the songs from VH with Dave, but prefer Sammy's singing ability. Dave gets on my ear's nerves after a little while, and he has only gotten worse with age.

Gary was probably the best singer and seems to be the most likable of the three, but I like his album less than most of the others, but that wasn't really his fault. But man those live videos from that era are great because he pulled stuff in from both Roth and Hagar eras.

Having seen some of the VH tribute stuff from Mitch Malloy with Pete Thorn, I really wish we could have gotten one album with him singing had the whole debacle with Dave not happened in the mid 90s. I feel he might have been the perfect mix of Dave and Sammy.

That all being said, this is my rankings based on the whole. It would be VERY different based on guitar tones.

  1. Fair Warning (Unchained and Mean Streets are so good!)
  2. VH II (Light up the Sky, DOA)
  3. VH I (Aint Talkin Bout Love, and Atomic Punk)
  4. 1984 (Panama, Hot For Teacher)
  5. 5150 (Dreams, Summer Nights)
  6. Carnal Knowledge ( Poundcake, Judgement Day, In n Out)
  7. OU812 (Finish What Ya Started, Sucker in a 3 Piece)
  8. VH III (Fire In The Hole, How Many Say I)
  9. Balance (Amsterdam, Seventh Seal)
  10. Women and Children (Cradle Will Rock and Romeo Delight being the highlights)
  11. Diver Down (Hang Em High and Cathedral)
  12. ADKOT (Stay Frosty, She's the Woman)
