Amps! Splawn, VHT, 5153

Not a bad choice in the three really it just depends on what you like. I LOVE the Splawn and Fryette's, I didn't click with the 5150III when I tried one out. I own a Sig X and it's one of my all time favorites, the rythm channel is very similar to the d60 and it's pure bliss. If you want clarity the Fryette stuff is pretty tough to match although the Splawns are in the same league. I'm also not a huge el34 guy and that is another reason I prefer the Fryette stuff. Good luck I don't think you can make a bad choice here.

Go Splawn Quick Rod with either a 2 x 12 or 4 x 12 with Small Blocks and you can't get a bad tone out of it. The clean channel I find to be wonderfully usable. The thing with Splawn is to tune it with your ears, not your eyes. Don't freak out if it sounds best with the mids dimed or the bass completely shut off--use your ears and let the knobs be where they sound best, not where you think they should be.

I actually still have a full ROCKMAN head--used to have two but I sold one. Using Marshall Valvestate 80/80s to power.

Sustainor 100a/Sustainor 200
2 x Instrument EQ
Midi Octopus/Smart Gate
Stereo Chorus/Stereo Echo

That is rock and roll my friend, I haven't used my stuff in quite a while, but I do love it. I have a DG and a Stereo Chorus/Echo somewhere and I use a DBX31b EQ for all the EQ stuff, but I haven't pulled it out in quite sometime, I also have an ADA MP1. So basically my rack is pure 80s bliss! I feel weird owning and loving this stuff being only 20, but frik it sounds good.

Were you by chance ever on Rockman-Gearup.Com forums?

I'm Kind of stuck between the Super Comp and the Competition right now as far as Splawn's go, but I'll figure it out. I'm probably gonna pick up a D60 just because its always nice to have more amps when the time arises! They go cheap enough too

The newer Splawns have a much better volume taper. My 2008 Nitro might as well just have a volume switch but my 2012 is way better in that department.

Splawns don't have to stay EL34 lots of guys using KT88's in them. I will be going that route as soon as I get my quad of big bottles. My Deliverance does sound bad ass with the KT88's and I am sure my Nitro will sound awesome with them as well.

Love Splawn 4x12's, but not the amps so much...I might like the Nitro if I got a chance to try it. Love the VHT/Fryette voice. If you could come across a CLX, that's what I'd grab. Would give you flexibility and great cut in mix. Haven't played the 5153.

I know that but I still prefer the Fryette stuff for me although I would be ok with a Splawn too :)

Just my .02

You DO NOT NEED FX WITH VHT!!!!!!!!!

Im telling you man, you dont....I can see the need for 2 channels but, hey just roll the volume down a little, and besides you said studio anyway right?

When I got my vht I threw every piece of rack gear at it with every combo possible and there was not one thing I could find that didnt actually take away from the already awesome tone.

It's not that I use millions of effects, but I have a select few that definitely need to be run in the loop. My Eventide PitchFactor is one of those, harmonies sound terrible up front, and there is no way I'd ever want to run it that way and with the music I play its used on about 85% of our set list in one way or another, so for me an FX Loop is a must.

My buddies Splawn Quick Rod seriously has such a great tone to it.

I'm loving my Splawn Quick Rod. Hard to get a bad sound out of it. It's done a good job on covering ground. I've got quite a few clips w/ it if you'd like to hear it. Hit me up in the PM's.

I've always wanted a 5153 too though(or maybe Sig X)...part of me worries that I wouldn't put it to use. I sold my Friedman Modded JMP(dumbest thing I've ever done) by convincing myself I needed something with a clean channel...just in case. So I got a Splawn w/ a clean channel and to be honest, I checked out the clean channel the day it came in and I haven't switched it over since. Like before, I just roll back my volume for cleans. It cleans up great.

Yea, but how do you get super, ultra fender clean by just rolling back the volume?
I have avoided Splawn for that reason. I play in a 90s cover band and some things we cover are super fender clean, almost acoustic quality. My Mesas, PWE and Bogner do this well.

Oh really? That's interesting, I'll have to look around, I haven't heard about that, but a good friend of mine had a Mills Afterburner I think it was and it sounded hugeeeee.

I very well might be thinking of another company which is what I was referring to and I would not want to hurt someone's livelihood with an uninformed comment.

You're on point with the Mills Acoustic trouble. Where there's smoke there's fire:

My Quick Rod in first or second gear, OD2 cleans up just fine with my volume knob, and I use Super 3 bridge...

I have quick rod I'm looking to sell very cheap and it sounds killer

I got my mills used, at a steal of a price too. I x patterned it with v30s and k100's, and.... I still like my emperors way more. Could be the speakers as I run a slew of eminences in everything besides the mills, but both of my 2x12's alone sound way bigger and more refined than my mills does.

I've been running my Splawn almost 2 years and just can't rock without it. You can always be heard in any mix with a Splawn and that's what it's about

Well I posted about the Nitro and now to update I just picked up a Splawn Competition 50 with matching 2 x 12 (small blocks) and wow what a difference. These things are really fun to play and have a good amount of great tones. Did someone say clean channel? What for? HAHA

I liked the 5153, didn't mesh with the Splawn Nitro, and the VHT is the best head I've ever played through. I'll never sell it. fwiw, there's a few folks that will add fx loops for a couple hundred. on the Mills thing, it is, without question, the best sounding cab I have ever played through. The troubles with the company are well documented, just find one used.

Id go for 5153 for versitile.

Can not comment on Splawns.

Id say D60 personally because I want one bad and play metal but your sig says you have one already???

5153 should be able to do anything.

I dont have a huge pedal board but one thing I have noticed for VHT/Fryette I do not need an fx loop. I ended up selling all my rack gear because everything I threw at it hurt the ampss already awesome sound.

Now as far as using fx loop for pedals than yea. You might want one but for me. I dont use any and if I did it would be delay/verb which id be fine with putting in front.

its going to be very dynamic and responsive to your guitar volume as well.

VHT/Fryette to me are very smooth, very unforgiving and uinique.
Splawn is the ultimate modern day Marshall, sits in any mix well, covers any style of music.
EVH 5150 III to me sounds nice but nothing unique, rather generic and nice. Not inspiring to me.

I love the features included with Splawns and many Fryettes. The Fryette FX loop is among the best made, and I use a lot of delay, chorus and a boost in the loop and Fryette loops are king, right up there with my new Mesa, Bogner and PWE.

Love the features on Splawn and the ease of use. 3 Gears, 2 OD types, and solo boost on a top notch Marshall style amp. What's not to love?

I heard awhile back they were struggling. Not sure if they sorted that all out but at the time it sounded like they were done. I've heard nothing but good stuff about the cabs though!
