I'm sorry for this dumb thread but it is driving me crazy. Why do people say AN SLO?

Every time I see a SLO mentioned on a forum it is posted as an SLO. Please explain.

Same reason people say "an hour" rather than "a hour." If it sounds like a vowel, you use "an."

It's not "A slow" it's "an S. L. O."

My sanity thanks you.

Edit: Please start using periods people :D

In an amp conversation I have never heard anyone say S.L.O., it's always SLO but your reply definitely clears things up for me thanks.

I asked the same question a few years ago. Used to drive me nuts too.

Yeah, but then technically we'd have to start typing "P.A.F." too...way too much work :)

It's about consonants & vowels. 'An' is used when the following word begins with the phonetic sound of a vowel. 'ess'.

An interesting one is 'An Hotel'. Hotel is a french word, where the 'H' is silent. ie 'otel' & so is preceded by 'an'.

  I know how to speak English. That is why it drove me crazy when I saw people say AN SLO.

I also know what S.L.O. stands for as an acronym. I just didn't connect the dots until Drewiv's reply because the issue for me is that you say SLO, as in SLOW. When people talk about this amp they just simply say SLO instead of S.L.O. (Ess-El-Oh)

This is a very good point as well because when this is said, you don't say PAF. You say (Pee-Ay-Eff)

I guess it comes down to when others say SLO, they are saying S.L.O. and when I say SLO I just say SLO.

Such a lame thread   I'm not really a grammar Nazi, I type half assed all the time it just bothers me for some reason to see someone say an SLO. lol

Lets take a tally, do you SLO or do you S.L.O.?

I've never heard anyone say "slow" when describing the SLO. That's weird.

If I heard someone say "an slow" I would immediately lose the will to live. ;-)

Being the old guy I am, and having been around since way before their introduction, I've always read/pronounced it as S.L.O. regardless of how it's typed. Until this thread, I'd never heard of anyone reading or pronouncing it as SLO(w), but I suppose there are lots of folks out there who do.

My grammar Nazi pet-peeve is "alot". Not a word kids. :-)

I've heard lots call it "slow". Then again I've heard people say "yearl" when describing a URL. I pronounce the letters since I know SLO stands for Super Lead Overdrive and I also know URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator. There are some exceptions we use that have become virtually universal, like JPG/"jaypeg"...although "GIF" will start the war to end all wars if you ask people how they pronounce it...

I say LOL all the time instead of L.O.L. and people look at me like I'm crazy.

It must just be laziness. SLO is technically one syllable where S. L. O. is three. If said out loud. Conversely, typing all of those periods is a PITA (P.I.T.A.)

IMO IIRC LOL used to be lots of love. LOLWTFBBQ

To me it's like Porsche...the traditional pronunciation really is "Porsha", but plenty of people say "Porsh". A SLO is traditionally "S L O" (Mike Soldano pronounces it this way), but plenty of people say "slow".

Thank technology and our instant gratification culture.
Language will continue to devolve. Just watch your young local news anchor or read online articles. It's pathetic.

Oh, and by the way, correcting someone on their illiteracy is now considered racist. A college professor somewhere said that exact thing recently.
