It's been a long time since I've listened to AJFA, but I remember loving that album and don't recall ever thinking "man this mix sucks." Maybe I'm tone deaf.

I know I'm deaf...but it's from listening to old Metallica VERY loud, caused it kicks monster ass.

Once you get to the Black album things get a bit wonky IMO. Big time tone shift, James finishes every word the same, etc.
I don't know if that's technically "bad" or just not what I was used to them sounding like. Either way, I don't personally care for it.

Yeah, today's Loudness war has got to stop. need a revolution, I refuse to master my songs like that. Fuck that Hard Limiting crap.

The mix is unusual for sure but really back in the day I don't remember anyone talking about it that......and it never kept me from loving the album.

Yup. I remember when it came out and thought the mix(especially the drums) sounded unusual. Unusual in a bad ass way though. Loved that the drums didn't sound like huge and overly effected. Sounded really raw and aggressive.

Kirk should quit Metallica and rejoin Exodus

James should start doing drugs again, then maybe he would be able to write a decent thrash riff again :dunno:

Lars should join the Justin Beiber band

Robert should go back to Suicidal Tendencies or Ozzy

Everything after the Justice album sucked

You forgot the part about re-hiring Dave Mustaine to write the songs again so they don't suck anymore.

too bad it is indeed lars' band and I guess he does have final say which is surprising because i met/hung with those guys back in the day[killem all for one tour and ride the lightning] and james was super domineering/aggro and opinionated

also
when that album came out me and all of my friends thought it sounded horrendous
this opinion might not have been general consensus or broadcasted thru the media but to us it was the sign
that the real alcoholica MUYA was on it's way out
they also did their first video for that album which was another sign of things to come

AJFA is possibly, maybe, probably, my favorite album of all time. You put that thing on a kickass STEREO system (not a home theater setup with subs designed for DVD soundtracks) and its one of the thumpiest, lowest Hz, clear, sonically separated rock/metal recordings I've ever heard. Trouble is, all that bass (not bass guitar) low frequency information lives in an area most playback systems have trouble reproducing. "One" always sounds razor thin on the radio or on TV watching the video, but again, on a high quality stereo system it sounds deep and rich.

I clearly remember Newsted talking about the then new AJFA release, that it was mixed in a way that kids wouldn't need an expensive Nakamichi stereo (high end Japanese manufacturer) to hear good quality audio from this recording. I think it turned out the opposite !

I have no problems with the mix because in those days it was tough to get super high gain with clarity. They tried to push the boundaries of sonic thunder and that's always an adventure.
I like a lot of the tunes, but some of the tunes did start to present some lengthy/boring arrangements. Still way better than what was about to come in the 90s with Poptallica.

Lars is about as repulsive a personality that one could have in a band. Ego + eroding skills = get out and give me Jordison. It may not sound like Metallica and that's a good thing if Metallica = inferior drum beats for the last 25 years.
You know what, Kirk can retire too. Pick a shredder, there's a million of them out there today that are fantastic. Keep Het as the main writer & let Trujillo write some stuff too as his Infectious Grooves material is incredible.

They should of just used the same recording settings as Master of Puppets. Such Killer songs on JFA. But man that thin tone gets annoying.
Even as a teen when I bought it me and a buddy were like
But new Metallica was what it was all about back then.

I didn't like it when it came out and let it pass me by. After buying the Black album on it's release and being over it in a week I re-discovered Justice which became a "new" album for me. Got into it a lot for a while but ultimately the mix is fatiguing and the arrangements on some of the material are over long and repetitive (boring). Master has how many songs that are 8 minutes or more? Not one feels too long. Justice has some great riffs and some great songs but it's painfully obvious what Cliff brought to the table when you listen to it. Blackened is still an amazing opener on any album though and I love the extensive clean parts in One. Not many metal bands were doing it that much back then.

Lars, good or bad, I agree that there wouldn't have been a Metallica without him and you have to remember that those three albums that most of us consider holy grail metal, he played on. Honestly, I feel a technically better drummer would have made them more predictable and not as interesting. Watch the Seattle DVD from Binge and Purge. He totally kills it live. He just didn't keep it up once the mega fame kicked in.

I remember one of my buddies, a die hard Metallica fan, give me his opinion of AJFA when it first came out and before I'd heard it: "man, they just don't sound like Metallica anymore" lol. I've always liked it and thought Lars was actually pretty bad-ass on it. He's shit the bed in a huge way since then, but overall it crushes.

Metallica would be so much better with a real drummer.

IMO they would not. Lars isn't a great drummer but music isn't all about being proficiently perfect. Without Lars IMO they wouldn't sound like Metallica, old or new.

Ever seen the concerts where Lars was sick and some drummers from other bands played with them instead. Yes, the timing and beats were tighter but it didn't sound like Metallica.

I totally agree. He puts in all the long hours in the studio as well as anything Metallica related. None of the other guys in the band seem to be bothered by it.

Musically, AJFA is brilliant. Unfortunately, as stated above, the mix is God aweful. It is very fatiguing on the ears. I wish they would do a complete remix and remaster of that album.

I agree that the music composition is brilliant. I also agree that the album can be fatiguing to the ears, but I personally don't think they should every change it. To me it is like changing star wars the way George lucas did to the original trilogy.
I don't know that remixing and remastering the album would matter at all. Lars is gonna be there the whole time again anyways, the other guys will ocassionally check in. It still wont please everybody. Those guys trust Lars with handleing everything anyways. They seem to have no desire to change it up.
The nostalgia aspect of Metallica is all that is keeping them going anyways. I seem to love playing live and it shows will all the smiling they do onstage.
That type of hunger that inspired AJFA... is not the same hunger they have now. They may even make it sound worse that what critics think of it now.

I saw the Death magnetic tour 10 times and each night was better than the next, culminating in a ridiculous night at Madison Square Garden where they played the shortest straw and dyers eve. F... the haters.
