I thought it sounded good.. Especially for what it was recorded with and the low volume it was at.. It was so low you could hear the guitar stings and it still sounded great... Thats the ole Brown Eye for ya :D

I agree! Unlike most modded tube amps I've had, the BE mod really seems like it makes the preamp tubes work harder, so even at low volume, I get great low end and touch sensitivity! Not sure if that's actually the case, but that's what it seems like.

I also find swapping the V2 preamp tube really changes the way the amp responds. I stuck a Tung Sol in there, and the amp really brightens up and sings. Replaced it with a JJ, and the amp gets way too dark for me. So I like Chinese/Tung Sol/Chinese so far!

The tungsol might not work very long in the cathode slot. Try it in the first slot and the rest chinese.

After modding, does the BE draw more current from V2? Do Chinese tubes hold up better than Russian 12AX7's? Why is that?

Tube amps with a cathode follower have to much voltage for this tube. This tube is not rated for it.

Interesting. Searching for a reason, I found out that Russian 12AX7's have a lower tolerance than Chinese or NOS tubes, making them bad cathode follower stage tubes!

Back to Chinese it will be! Thanks.

As an update, I noticed strange muffled hissing and some random pops coming from the amp, with no guitar plugged in. I was hoping it wasn't the new JJ tubes, but when I swapped them out for some EH tubes I had lying around, the noises went away, the low end tightened up, and the amp sounds more like a Plexi with the volume rolled back on the guitar.

Damned JJ tubes!

There you go!

You know how tubes are. You can buy some and immediately have issues. My tubes in my JSX have lasted for years thru gigs and even shipping from Hawaii. I could put another pair in there and them go right away.
