I love Portnoy but think this will be a fresh breath of air for their music. I expect that they'll all be very inspired.

I dont get the impression that inspiration is the goal at all. Everything I see in these videos and hear them saying suggests that they want every little thing to stay exactly the same. Im sure the drummers will all be required to play double bass kits even if they would never choose to on their own. A double bass kit is the DT method so thats the way things will be done.

this ^^^

it COULD be a fresh of breath air
but petrucci and ruddess will keep it crusty and stale

They want the already written songs to sound the same when they play live. I'm sure once they start recording, the new drummer can write whatever he likes (within reason). Seems reasonable to me.

He seems legitimately touched to even be asked to audition. Derek Roddy obviously could take it or leave it.

psst, its the first guy. ;)
It was only a few days ago I spoke with a good friend of "the first guy" about this. He didn't know who the new drummer was.

Seems if it is "the first guy", he can really keep a secret.

Minneman sounded the best, IMO, but Mangini has the soul/drive.

Roddy seems like the nicest, realest, most unaffected dude though. Everything Mangini says just sounds like its coming from an industry mouth and someone who is trying to say all the right things.

That Mangini was very good but certainly not my top pick. He is definitely great, just looks too staged and those over-reacted metal faces need to go, that band isn't about that.

You've obviously not watched Portnoy.

Episode 3 is Friday @ 11 A.M.

Son of a bitch! I don't think I can wait that long. :gethim:

Seriously though, I'm not into Dream Theater at all, but I am enjoying these videos.

Mike gets my vote, to be frank. Nothing against the other guys, but there's something about his touch that almost makes you forget the ridiculous technique it has - it's so captivating. He's also a star of a guy, which is a plus, of course. :)

mike is the predictable choice
predictable just like dt's writing these days

grats mr mangini, i preferred the more fun vibe of minneman tbh, but whatever, mike is a great drummer and seems like a really nice guy

i haven't really properly listened to DT since metropolis pt2, curious to see how the new stuff turns out now, but probably won't be a huge shift

This was totally cool. Watched it in fullscreen hd on my 27 inch imac cranked thru my apogee duet into krk 8 monitors. Sounded and looked awesome.
Bring on the next episode of my favorite new reality show. Petrucci was adjusting amp tones on his Axe Ultra but i wish he would upload some patches so i could try them out and learn some of his Axe Fx tweaking secrets  .

I have it through first hand knowledge that John Pertucci is using our own, Mark Days presets and his manager requested them directly from Mark so there ya go.

ps: I would love to see Bill Ward get the gig.

Cool. It would be even cooler if Mark didn't allow Petrucci to use those presets.

I will buy the new CD. $10 at Best Buy is not too much for my curiosity.
