the way it is wired it is so dark it is unusable IMO

have you tried lowering the bass side of the neck pickup?

you can also put a cap in series with the neck lead wire in the control cave, it will trim off some of the lows.

I prefer the modern wiring. The 50's wiring seems too bright when you back off on the volume (to me at least).

I agree with this, but it's not a day and night kind of a thing. I thought that the 50's wiring actually gave me a little better note separation when cranked up, but I also changed pots and caps when I did mine, so that may have had an effect as well.
