Anyone using greenbacks for high gain stuff ?

I've been using Greenbacks for quite some time. I love them, and they work just fine for metal, that's what I play, primarily.

I used the old 60’s 20watt GB’s for many years till they kinda gave out on me. Very good, but didn’t project sound very far. Good for club gigs though.

Don’t really like them for recording any more, too much distortion. Liking the Creamback 65’s though. Similar voiced, just clearer.

This all makes sense and you have the practical experience with them that I don’t have as much of. All I can say is that I’ve done tons of exhaustive AB comparisons with them vs my other speakers (both in and out of cabs) and to me them and the ‘60’s blues have a quality of tone and feel that is in imo in a league of its own to everything I’ve tried, but doesn’t mean they’re the best tool for the job like in huge room or with super powerful amps. They also seem to be my loudest speakers. When they’re in my cabs they seem to overshadow the other speakers

The Creamback 65’s to me sounded just ok, nothing magical or exceptional going on tonally imo. I didn’t really care for the higher wattage GB-esque speakers I’ve had (Creambacks 65’s & H75’s, heritage 65’s and vented T75’s). They all seem to have extra horsepower of the powerful speakers, but worse in tone, mids and responsiveness. For high powered speakers I’ve liked best my various JBL’s and Crescendo’s. For me they’re miles ahead of the other high wattage speakers I’ve had

The ones I had (still have two) were in 60’s basketweave Marshall cabs (still have the cabs). They were T1511’s. Loved them but you had to be somewhat close to them (within 20 feet or so). Pretty full range speaker. But they got old and tired. Had two reconed and they just don’t sound the same. Maybe they need 40 years of beating on them to come around, that will be for the next person to do someday.

With 2-12 cabs it is very hard to find speakers I like that don’t die. So far the Creamback and 7 string are pretty happy.

Crescendo, is that a Fane? Been looking for something to go with my old Hiwatt.

I had mine in my Kerry Wright 412 and also one in my Schroeder 112 (it's a special design cab that sounds almost as big as my 412's and to me the best tone of the cabs I currently have). Not sure what code mine are. I have 3 that are 16 ohm. One of them sounds to me like it must've had little to no playmate on it because it's so bright and crisp, while the other 2 have the same flavor of tone, but sound warmer and more broken in. Mine don't have a lot of bottom end, but almost everything else about them are incredible to my ears. Maybe that could be part of the projection you were mentioning

Yes, the Fane Crescendo's. Not intended to be guitar speakers I believe. They work very well with Hiwatt's imo. I have 6 of them. There are a few different versions of the Crescendo's, but overall they're pretty similar. Kinda like how many old Celestion models varied. I like the tone best of my ones where they have those clamps rather than the lugs where I gotta solder

I would be afraid of using them in a 1-12!

When mine sounded great they were full with tight bass and smooth. Then they changed where they got brigght and crisp and that low end went away. Tried getting two of them reconed, but they are still bright and crisp. Sold the others to Greg Germino and searched awhile to find something to replace them. Still haven’t found anything, but am happy enough with what I have amd just rolling with it. Not going down the vintage rabbit hole, too many are used up imo.

Will have to look at those Fanes abit.

Yeah I don't push amps too hard in that 112, although I was the other day playing my Uberschall pretty hard through it. Hopefully didn't cause too much harm lol. I'm gonna go back to a Gold in that 112 soon though. That's my favorite non-vintage speaker. Super underrated imo

Hm so maybe the one I have that's more bright and crisp was actually played more then, but I like that one a little more than my other 2. All 3 are very tight and to me the exact opposite of what I consider smooth. They've got ferocious mid growl like nothing else had. Even the 25H one has some that despite the hollowed out H magnet sound

The Crescendo's I'm a big fan of. Rare and not cheap though. They sound huge and fat, but like Hiwatt's have this very neutral kinda sound that isn't for everyone. I often use them on the bottom row in my 412 with something else on top to contrast

I need to try recording with my greenback more, not sure I’ve ever done a full mix with it
Recording they usualli sound great no matter . Live jamming I do miss some of thump they don’t have compared to other speakers . That’s my only negative about green backs . It’s a feel thing live for me

My favorite combination for metal is EVH greenback paired with Redback in Engl 212 box.

I too love my EVH cab as well. The cabinet itself is incredibly well made and is basically a copy of an early 70s Marshall cab. Made extremely well, and sounds great to me. However, I love the greenbacks higher powered cousin the creamback 65 more. Absolutely one of my top 3 favorite speakers, my Engl cab with them is just insane sounding.

Another longtime greenback user for the heavies here. Lately I’ve really got into a Fan F70 I got from Avatar years ago. Really takes fizz off the top end with a great mid voice.

I have a few cabs with the 90s G12Ms but generally I prefer a V30 type IMHO.
