Avenged Sevenfold?

I heard another new song from their latest on the radio yesterday and it was incredibly derivative. Looks like there're taking a more than a few pages out of Megadeth and Metallica's mid 90's phase. Why anyone would want to do that, I don't know but it's obviously a calculated step to take the band to the next level of commercial success.

I don't mind these guys and enjoy a few of their songs but can definitely hear how some would feel sharply critical of their "cover" like approach to originals. Even the older stuff took a huge chunk from the Misfits.

Oh no...I try to stay open minded on different music styles, but that is one subset genre that gives me the heebie jeebies

There is no denying that Synyster Gates is a great player. Not in the league of the gods that he learned from and was inspired by, but he's probably done as much or more to introduce the current generation of listeners to the shred than almost any other modern player. I think he gets a lot of hate because he isn't of the old generation of players and his band has had more mainstream success than other equally or more talented players out there.

Far from the best shredder ever but not bad by any means
Certainly a better Lead Guitarist than CC Deville and Mick Mars (and his name is no more annoying than those two's names)

Funny how when dudes get old they tend to hate anything not from thier generation (closed minds)

Interesting comment. I can dig some Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, Led Zeppelin, Spooky Tooth, Blue Cheer, and Hawkwind, amongst others, yet none of them are from my generation.

As for being a better lead guitarist than C.C. DeVille and/or Mick Mars, Brian Haner (aka Synyster Gates) doesn't even come close. Since when is anything he's ever done been memorable? Synyster Gates is just another face in the crowd, while C.C.'s or Mick's work is instantly recognizable.

Let me help you.

Megadeth
Anthrax
Slayer
Iron Maiden
Bon Jovi
Poison/Bret Michaels
Motley Crue

All still playing larger venues.
Thanks for the help, albeit condescending. I know, that's just Nails being Nails.
Stadium shows, not large venues.
When I saw Anthrax on their last tour, it was a B venue.
Slayer is not grabbing the A stadiums as a headliner.
Iron Maiden may be, but are they selling it out?
Bon Jovi is closer to Vegas/Atlantic City show act for 40+ audiences than US stadiums circa 1988
Your hero Brett Michaels may (or may not) be doing it based off his reality shows, but that will likely be fleeting
Motley Crue hasn't been an A venue club in 20 years.

I'm talking about the stadium success yielded by the bands of the 70s and 80s- there are dozens of acts that packed large A list stadiums for decades. Those bands are down to just a few in the realm of Rock/Metal. They are replaced by Rhianna type shows that have pop with rock crossovers
Perhaps overseas metal packs the festivals, but I am referring to USA
I just took a look at US Airways and Jobing stadiums in Phoenix- there are ZERO rock shows coming up in the next 90 days
Some may think this is due to impact of Synster Gates failure to execute memorable solos, thereby crushing Metal in a single stroke.

Hardly condescending, sorry you feel that way.

- Bret Michaels? Hardly a fan of Bret Michaels, and he's certainly not my hero. Sure, I like some of Poison's music, but I wouldn't consider myself enough of a fan to go see them.

- Bon Jovi? I'll give ya that one. They've definitely crossed over into that "My Mom Just Bought Bon Jovi's New Record" territory, no denying that. Hell, my mom bought a Bon Jovi record! Yep, I definitely KNEW something was wrong when my mom bought one of his records, but no skin off my ass, I didn't listen to anything after "Slippery When Wet." The first time I heard "New Jersey," I got scared, turn around and ran, and never looked back.

Bands who sold out large stadiums in the 70s and 80s? What's your idea of an "A Venue?" Madison Square Garden? Well, when's Avenged Sevenfold played an "A Venue?" Yeah, they're at "B Venues," too. The only time they'll ever play an "A Venue" is if they're billed for a festival. In that case, it can be argued the likes of shitty bands like Pretty Boy Floyd are playing "A Venues."

And just for the record, I'm more into the heavier shit over the glam shit. Right now, I'm chomping at the bit for Susperia's new record they're working on to drop. A new record from Immortal would be nice, too.

What's your idea of an "A Venue?" Madison Square Garden?
Yes, 10,000+ equals A venue. Not my opinion as much as it is accepted industry categories.
That being said, the B venues typically are way more suited for quality sound.

Well, when's Avenged Sevenfold played an "A Venue?" Yeah, they're at "B Venues," too. The only time they'll ever play an "A Venue" is if they're billed for a festival.
IDK, I'll assume you are correct that they have the festival dates mixed in with B venues... kind of funny that one can infer that taking a shot at AS is bringing me down, lol. I'm not a big fan of the band due to the singer- as I stated here earlier
I'm guessing they would have a hard time packing a large arena on their own, but IDK. Few bands can these days, which is a sad
thing IMO

The stuff I read from the members in that band make them out to be pretty much down to Earth.

With rap....,I mean crap, hip hop, pop, and other forms of audio Diarrhea we have here in the states it's good to see ANY hard rock band do well.

Zacky's fellow guitarist Synyster Gates chipped in, saying, "I hope we're not the Last of the Mohicans when it comes to putting on a big, crazy, over-the-top theatrical rock show. This is what we grew up on, with bands like Maiden and Metallica, and I really hope we're not the last of a dying breed. "We want to blow kids' minds just as we had our minds blown by massive shows when we were growing up," Gates added. "Metal should be spectacular and dramatic and thrilling. When kids invest their time and money in coming to see us, we owe it to them to give them the best night of their lives."

This. The days of their flash and outrageous appearance and behavior is gone- the only thing that remains is their live show, the production of which is always stunning and above ANYTHING out there today. People may piss and moan that they don't have the talent of earlier bands- and maybe they don't, in a lot of ways- but they and a few select other bands will be the ones to carry the torch in the face of overwhelming amounts of pop music that threatens to wipe rock as a genre out of existence in popular music.

Ever been to a KISS concert? I'm fairly certain they put on a better show than Avenged Sevenfold. Despite their ages, they still have more energy than 95% of the bands out there today. Most of them just stand there onstage, looking depressed. Want an outrageous show with flashes and bangs, they're your ticket. I've seen far more musically talented bands than KISS, but from a "show" perspective, I'm yet to see one who comes remotely close.

Yeah, I forced myself into viewing an Avenged Sevenfold show on YouTube yesterday, and I'll give them credit for their live show, but sometimes a band needs more than a show. The music just falls short of their show. Despite having absolutely no respect or appreciation for their weak, flaccid music and lack of any real musical talent, I'd probably enjoy their live show.

As for being the last to carry the torch for Metal, don't bet on it; the Scandinavians don't show any signs of slowing down anytime soon.

Kiss!  You couldn't pay me to go to a Kiss concert.

I'm guessing you could smoke Synister Gates. lol, I doubt it. The dude can play. You must have hearing problems or something. Just the guitar harmonies alone are pretty complicated. And, you come in here on the attack and then cry about people getting their backs up.  I mean if you don't think they can play, maybe you should post some of your musical masterpieces. It makes me wonder if you can even play. :jerkit:

Who's crying? I'm not the one hugging Synyster Gates' nuts. And I can hear just fine, and unfortunately I've heard Synyster's worse than shitty music. Then, you're going to claim I can't play. Sounds like a challenge. Prove YOU can play, big man.
