Avenged Sevenfold?

I heard them.....and liked them prior to even seeing a pic of the band. Their look dont bother me a bit. I liked a few of their first songs.
After that it seemed they just kept releasing the same song.....over....and over....and over...that was a turn off for me.

I was in 8th grade when Waking the Fallen came out, I was into it at the time. Haven't really liked anything since though... :dunno:

Cool music, but that singer has a sly style that gets annoying real quick
Lol at inserting Mars & CC in a guitar hero conversation

I like Sevenfold....but would still listen to Crue or Poison anyday.
Guess its just me. ;)

Id have to go talk radio if they were my only choices lol
Unless it was early Crüe

Had Avenged Sevenfold come out in the 80s, they wouldn't have ever made it out of their parents' basements.
I'm not buying that at all. I'm not a fan of them at all (somehow it all just sounds very insincere to me), but they can play circles around most bands from the 80s, and god knows that era is my total musical foundation.

Neil, I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with you on the "play circles around them." Neither of those guys will ever come remotely close to the skills and talents of guys like Jason Becker, Paul Gilbert, Marty Friedman, Yngwie Malmsteen, Warren DiMartini, George Lynch, Nuno Bettencourt, Vito Bratta, Reb Beach, Dave Murray, Adrian Smith, Randy Rhoads, Jake E. Lee, Dave Mustaine, Chris Poland, and I could keep going. Those guys couldn't even get close to C.C. DeVille or Mick Mars, both of whom are underestimated in their own right.
this fuck... 11 posts and his ass is already the big brain on who is who.. LOLZ!!!!!!! Syn went to Musicians Institute and graduated with honors that's why they sound better after he joined and they were influenced by all the bands you just mentioned.. What a fuktard....Contempt prior to investigation... That's like,, oh forget not waste my time troll!!!!!!

Did I say I was an expert? Clearly you don't know shit if you think Synyster Gates is actually good. What are you, 15? Run along, and just shut the fuck up while you're behind, junior. Go listen to your Asking Alexandria and Bullet For My Valentine records.

I can take them in small doses, stylistically speaking but to say they aren't good players is ridiculous. I thought they had some good stuff on that Nightmare album.

I think they derive a lot of hate from 2 sources- their appearances (which they've vastly toned down in recent years and have even admitted being embarrassed about now) and the fact that their fans are rabid and think that they are the best band of all time (which they are not). I loved everything up to Nightmare, but even I have to admit that they tried to be 10 different bands at once with Hail to the King and stepped away from their signature sound that makes them stand out from the crowd. It's not a bad record, it just feels like they tried to combine too many influences into one. Too eclectic, as it were.

That being said, they and a few other choice groups are the ones keeping rock and metal alive as a form of popular music to the current generation of listeners in an era of rap, pop, and electronic music. And for that, we should be thankful.

I can see your point with most of those players, but CC DeVille and Mick Mars really aren't in Synyster Gates' league at all for lead playing.

Neilli, PLEASE tell me you're joking. Synyster Gates can't even write a solo worth listening to, let alone play one worth listening to. I've listened to every Avenged Sevenfold record to drop, from their first to their last, and they're so remedial, I just can't listen to more than a few songs at a time. I invite you to take a listen to some of "Syn's" handiwork on YouTube, as there are PLENTY of solos "spotlighting" the "talents" of Synyster Gates.

C.C. Deville and Mick Mars never claimed to be great guitarists, but have you ever heard a solo by either of them that didn't fit into the song they were playing? The odds are, you probably haven't. Both of those guys, while they're not technical wizards, always evoked emotion in their playing, and it came through in their songs. Listen to Crue's "Home Sweet Home" as an example. No, that solo isn't great (simple pentatonic), but damned if it doesn't hit like a ton of bricks. Name a single song Avenged Sevenfold have ever done that even come close to emitting anywhere near as much emotion. While "Home Sweet Home" may be a ballad, that song still hits harder than ANYTHING Avenged Sevenfold have vomited on to any of their records.
Wow, that's an unexpected response. The solo to "Home Sweet Home" is actually below par for Mars. Repetitive and boring. Certainly not hard hitting when I hear it. I'm stunned that's your example of Mars' pinnacle. His solo on "All in the Name of Rock" is a much better example of Mars playing a simple solo that matches the feel and groove of a song.

You love Mars' playing - I get it. But you really don't sound objective here at all.

Pinnacle? I said this was Mars' "pinnacle?" Please quote that for me where I said that. I thought it was pretty clear when I said it was an example. Regardless, Synyster Gates has yet to write ANYTHING even close to Mars' very basic solo, as I also mentioned, did I not? The fact is that Mars is an underrated guitarist who isn't appreciated, he always has been. He's not the greatest, but he's sure as hell better than Synyster Gates (who isn't?) The videos of Synyster Gates' live performances are all over the internet. Simply put, he can't play half the shit you hear on the record. Why not? Because he probably didn't play the shit on the record! I'm sure you've heard of "studio musicians."

And FWIW, while I do appreciate Mick Mars' contributions to Rock/Metal, whatever you wanna call it, I'm not the die-hard Mick Mars fan you seem to think I am. Mick was never one of my influences, and is still not one of my influences. Mick Mars' playing never made me wanna pick up a guitar.

I'm sorry you think Synyster Gates is actually a good guitarist. Given he seems to be the wet dream of every little kid out there with a guitar, I dread what the future of Metal will be.

Where is it? I surely haven't heard it. That record is nothing more than basic and processed. Is that the best they could do? I mean, their drummer had just died, and they claimed they "poured everything they had" into that record. Hell, they even employed Mike Portnoy for that record, yet they STILL failed to make a record hardly worth listening to.

Just for shits and giggles, here's some of "Syn's" handiwork. In the first video, the playing isn't only sloppy as hell, but it could all be the same song. As for his few little sweep-picking licks, he's not even remotely good at it. Please let me know how this garbage is any better than anything Mick Mars has ever done, because this all sounds very repetitive to me, the same that's been said about Mick Mars.

Well, I'm sure glad this guy isn't my guitar teacher!

Yes, just oozing with talent. Sounds like some kid who's been playing for a year and trying to show off for his friends. :scared:

More basic, "technical wizardry...

Now, hey, I'm sorry to hurt the sensitive feelings of Synyster Gates fans, but I'm pretty sure the videos of his "awesome" playing speak for themselves. As for the guy who jumps in, slinging insults and "LOLZ," he's already thrown any little bit of credibility he had right out the window, acting like a small child who's incapable of holding any sort of intelligent conversation. It prides me to see people like him seem to be in the minority here.

Felt I should pop in here with all this talk of Mick Mars lol

I really their song Nightmare when it came out when I was in their demo back then and the fact their latest album went to #1 is pretty impressive for a metal band so I gave em props for that and they supposedly put on an actual stage show on their last tour (and brought Halestorm with them on tour) so they have all the right ingredients for me to like em, I just never got into them. But I agree the one guy Synyster Gates does do the shred thing pretty well, I think that solo to Nightmare was the first song I remember hearing real shred with sweep picks and all that in when it first came out... The most bad ass thing I ever heard on the radio!

I feel like if I sat down and listened to them I would be a fan but I've never taken the time to do so

I bought their latest CD, listened to it a few times, egh. There's something about them that sounds very cliche. In the solos they sound like they try a little too hard to get their vibrato....to not suck, if that makes sense,

Lol @ the Synester Gates destroying the future of metal dissertation

I used to dig Waking the Fallen/City of Evil in High School, and I believe Eternal Rest was the first song I attempted to learn in a drop tuning. I didn't like their self-titled album, but still went to see them live with a few friends. They gave a really half-assed lazy performance with no encore (even though they played a video that made it look like they were coming back on stage), and I'm pretty sure they were all drunk. I haven't listened to them since then.

A while ago I read an article on Ultimate Guitar that made them look cocky and as if they thought they were the last true metal band and some other junk. I didn't like that.
