Well, I'm an 80's guy who "kind of" keeps up with the times, so modern to me is anything past 1989

OK, somewhat younger examples (closer to Synyster's age for comparison)...Tosin, Laiho, Jari Mäenpää, Stéphan Forté. Not saying 80's guys should dig the styles of these players, but these are the types of players that I think represent the era better.

Nickelback versus Pre-Nuno Extreme? A7X versus Poison? I just hear these things thrown out and back to my original point...debating different eras and players is cool, but at least pick some decent content to start with.

My brother's a big Alexi Laiho/"Children of Bodom" fan, but they do nothing for me. Yeah, CoB have some cool riffs, but Alexi Laiho just fails to impress me on any level. I've never been "wowed" by anything he's done. I find him to be severely overrated.

IMO, the best modern Metal guitarist out there today is Tosin Abasi. There's not a single, modern Metal guitarist who comes remotely close to him in terms of creativity and talent. I'm not a huge "Animals As Leaders" fan, but damned if they can't play their asses off...

You're right, Synyster Gates isn't even worthy of mention. He's basically the Ford Pinto of Metal.

I guess because Loomis just didn't get the attention so people think of him as a newer modern player, he's 42 or 43. He was in a band called Sanctuary years back. And Romeo is 45 now. Symphony X has been around for a long time but they've only got some attention in the USA on their last couple of CD's.

I guess because Loomis just didn't get the attention so people think of him as a newer modern player, he's 42 or 43. He was in a band called Sanctuary years back. And Romeo is 45 now. Yes, Sanctuary was a great band, they had some really good material. I think Michael Romeo's first band was Gemini, as you mentioned. I like some of Symphony X's material, but I'm not a huge fan of Prog Metal in general. I used to really like Dream Theater, but their past few records just haven't changed much. Their latest is a nice breath of fresh air.

Neither of those guys will ever come remotely close to the skills and talents of guys like Jason Becker, Paul Gilbert, Marty Friedman, Yngwie Malmsteen, Warren DiMartini, George Lynch, Nuno Bettencourt, Vito Bratta, Reb Beach, Dave Murray, Adrian Smith, Randy Rhoads, Jake E. Lee, Dave Mustaine, Chris Poland, and I could keep going. Those guys couldn't even get close to C.C. DeVille or Mick Mars, both of whom are underestimated in their own right.

Guys, there it is. I've been wrong. After witnessing such an awesome display of musical prowess and creativity, my opinion is forever changed of Synyster Gates. HAIL TO THE KING!

The only positive thing I can say about Synyster Gates' playing is that he's keeping young kids from being poisoned by Kesha and Bieber, and for that, I'm grateful to Mr. Haner/Gates...

Daneo has several posted in his sig. He can actually play guitar.....really good. Not just talk about how much somebody sucks when they more than likey can't play at all. Because you have no idea of easy and difficult. I'd really love to see you wheel out that bat country solo that's so simple, like talk "Dirty to Me" But, I'm sure Daneo doesn't meet your high level of expectation. Because you're soooooo great. But unfortunitely, there's no clips from you to prove it. It's amazing that you don't have recordings of your awesomeness and your vast songwriting ability. Maybe your website's just down for you and your band. But I'm sure you'll get back to us later so we can purchase your great songs and recordings of your super high level musicianship. lmfao.

You know what bothers me the most? And I've gone on rants about this before. I actually despise people that get on the internet and slam other musicians. First of all, if you're a real musician, it's unprofessional. It just comes off as sour grapes. Like jealousy. Second, just because you don't like their music, doesn't mean it's sucks. A real musician would look at the music for what it is, and analize from a technical standpoint, a writing standpoint or whatever. There are a ton of bands that I don't personally like but you have to give them props for one thing or another. Third, the other thing is when they base their opinion on the few songs they've heard on the radio. And, then jump on the A7F sucks or nickelback sucks or whatever. Lastly, going on and on about how badly somebady plays when it's obvious the dude can't play at all and just doesn't know any better. He's just regurgitating stuff his guitar playing buddies are saying because A7F are famous and have "sold out".

The truth is they put together a pretty damn good band. They are playing good, hard rock songs that have good solos and are fairly techinically proficient (regardless of what that nails douchebag says because he's flat out wrong!). What's not to like? I just don't get people like that. Can someone people explain it to me like I'm a 6 yearold, because that's what level of thinking nails is on? Steps down off of soap box

I'm most definitely not a hater, but judging someone's abilities by an album is risky. You can pull off a lot of stuff with Pro Tools Live, you only get one chance. But like someone said. The kids in the audience loved it, and that's what matters

This board is obsessed with comparing the not-so-great players/bands of different eras. CC compared to Synyster? Who the fuck cares?!

80's had major innovators like Eddie, Randy, and Yngwie...tasty though inconsistent/incomplete players like Lynch...and totally underrated monsters by any era's standards like say MacAlpine.

Modern times...shit, Jeff Loomis, Govan, Romeo, the list goes on forever.

Bashing the 80's based on the sillier/less talented aspects is as retarded as labeling all modern music as "screamo" or putting A7X as the poster child. Awesome players/bands from all eras...some just feel more like "home" depending on your history.

Funny that you use those guys as an example of modern times when they're all in their 40's.

Daneo has several posted in his sig. He can actually play guitar.....really good. Not just talk about how much somebody sucks when they more than likey can't play at all. Because you have no idea of easy and difficult. I'd really love to see you wheel out that bat country solo that's so simple, like talk "Dirty to Me" But, I'm sure Daneo doesn't meet your high level of expectation. Because you're soooooo great. But unfortunitely, there's no clips from you to prove it. It's amazing that you don't have recordings of your awesomeness and your vast songwriting ability. You know what bothers me the most? And I've gone on rants about this before. I actually despise people that get on the internet and slam other musicians. First of all, if you're a real musician, it's unprofessional. It just comes off as sour grapes. Like jealousy. Second, just because you don't like their music, doesn't mean it's sucks. A real musician would look at the music for what it is, and analize from a technical standpoint, a writing standpoint or whatever. There are a ton of bands that I don't personally like but you have to give them props for one thing or another. Third, the other thing is when they base their opinion on the few songs they've heard on the radio. And, then jump on the A7F sucks or nickelback sucks or whatever. Lastly, going on and on about how badly somebady plays when it's obvious the dude can't play at all and just doesn't know any better. He's just regurgitating stuff his guitar playing buddies are saying because A7F are famous and have "sold out".

Actually, I wasn't talking about Gates specifically. And it is what I thought, you aren't a musician. Just some prick behind a keyboard spouting off shit he's heard because he really doesn't know the difference between difficult to play and not..

And, why in the fuck would I want to talk about any guitarist with a condescending prick who doesn't know enough about music to know the diffence between good and bad. And it isn't the knowlege level that's the reason I wouldn't want to talk to you about anything. it the fact that you are a condescending prick internet tough guy who still lives with his mom in the basement.
