I saw that Mark had posted about the reactor but rather than just reply to that one I thought it would be easier to just have its own thread.

First off thanks again, to Mark who is truly one of the nicest and coolest guys to hang out with on top of being an incredible guitar player.

So, I drove down to Limelight yesterday to check out the Axe 2 as well as the Atomic 50/50 and the Matrix power amp that had just arrived.

I got the chance to hear it" in the Room" with Mark playing it at a pretty good stage volume. I can honestly say that no you tube video, soundcloud posting is ever going to give you the experience of standing next to the actual cabinets.

Mark First played through the CAA head using the ultra for a bit of Delay Etc ,It was loud and would've have cut through just about anything ,rocked big time.

Then he switched over to the Atomic 50/50 and the Axe 2 and pulled up and Uber sim..I have to tell ya .it was VERY VERY close Scary actually, I would venture to guess that if you were blindfolded many would not be able to tell. The Atomic was very loud and very punchy and this was only one side with the Volume ay half so maybe 25 or 30 watts.

Next up was the Axe into the matrix ,Right away it seemed a bit tighter and more low end, it didn't have quite the depth .but certainly sounds good and would be an awesome choice for a small and light weight rig .I liked it better than the Art SL2 I had heard before and while there was nothing really lacking in it ,there was just something about the Atomic that gave it the edge IMO.

Mark , then plugged me with my guitar into his setup ,the CAA first so you can hear it , and get the "feel" .
We moved over to the Axe 2 into the 50/50 playing with the Uber and Marsha sim ,He even quickly dialed in the CAA lead sim and made a few tweaks..

There was NO Noticeable difference in FEEL and the sound again was eerie close, also I believe the CAA Mark has is EL34???? (He can correct me) ,vs the 6l6 in the atomic. I would venture to guess if you put EL34s into the Atomic you may even come even closer.

Although ,I am no where near the player of Marks caliber there are certain things I look for in my guitar sound. The open strings and how they ring out . the intro to the Scorps Tease me please me is a good example .I also look for and amp where I can pull pinch harmonics out easily without a fight and , and finally a low end chug that while is tight has a bit of give and chew as well.
I can honestly say the Axe2/Atomic rig does this as well as the amps i use.

I know it is hard to convince someone on the clips alone but this thing does react very much as you would expect it to .I am also reminded of Reinholds comment of a preamp/ power amp combo will never sound exactly like a head which is true I think .Regardless this rig does a hell of a job of getting close and even if it doesn't nail a Cameron or a Jose ,Deizel It is inspiring and fun to play

Hope this Helps !!!!

Thanks again Mark

Thanks for the review! Sounds like it was a good time. I look for similar things when trying out an amp so it sounds promising. Can't wait for my AXE II.

Ya it was fun

I think you will dig it ...

I am trying to decide on the Matrix or an FRFR route as well...thanks for the review

Few questions. I don't see the Atomic reactor on there site. So its a tube power amp?

My needs are simple:
Play in my room through a 2X12. I will also being recording direct which is simple enough. But to play live, rehearsal or in room. Is using the Atomic into a Mesa 2X12 best option or the SLA? I play wide range of stuff. Not hardcore metal. More Verve, U2 and some hard rock like Linkin Park.
Using a power amp do you need to turn off the amp sims?

For playing out live is it best to go to the houses PA or can I use my cab and go to front of house also at same time. I want simple but good tone. I was thinking the AXEII and SLA and 2X12 might be simple enough?

Hi Keano,

Atomic has a new site now that has the Reactor 50/50 details. It is available and shipping in our online store. Check it here: http://www.atomicamps.com.

To answer a couple of your questions:

* Reactor 50/50 into a Mesa 2x12 should be a great match.
* Most people keep the power amp sims "on".
* You can mic your cab or go FOH with your modeler and just use the cab for your stage volume - whichever you prefer.

Best,

Tom

So do you think it would be better with two Atomic powered cabs or wedges in stereo (powered or using own power amp)for rehearsal and stage or going through FOH and 2 atomic cabs for me on stage? How loud can you go and stay clean on the wedge or cab? Is the wedge or cab best or playing bars and small clubs? Does playing in stereo give a better tone for effect presets?

Or should I just get a 2X12 and the reactor power amp? LOL

BTW by keeping the power sims on does that defeat purpose of using a power amp? So can I just power on the axe and just use any preset as is then? Even the cab sims?

Leave the amp sims on. I believe the speaker is a 200w, I very well could be wrong but I thought I read that either in the manual or at the fractal site. It should stay clean, it does playing my iPod through it cranked.

Cool xperience. Nice to hear the Matrix was that close. Maybe with a bit of dialing the axe in the Matrix would have topped the Atomic. But if you liked the Atomic go for it.

Would love to hear Mark's opinion on the Matrix with his axe-fx dialing xperience.

I've had the the Matrix for about two months, been driving it with a Digitech GSP 1101 into an Orange 2x12, and other musos have told how good the rig sounds. I feel a bit like I'm cheating on my Orange Thunderverb, I haven't used it in weeks - wait until the Axe-Fx II turns up so I can bin off my rack mounted pedals, tuner and GSP 1101.

Anyway I definitely recommend the GT 800FX to anyone going down the digital route. It is also a lot lighter than my mate's VHT power amp, which he's sold in favour of a Matrix (he's getting old and I think he may not like the bills to get his back sorted ;) ).

Back to what DADA said, it could be case of dialling it in. My mate with the VHT had to dial his Axe FX Standard in, and I had to dial my GSP in - but it was worth it, and still is.

excellent post

What is the matrix?

The Matrix GT 800FX is a solid state power amp designed (AFAIK) for digital preamps, but I've said enough already; let this youtuber answer your question:

Paulmapp has a load of guitar based vids on his youtube site reference VHT vs Matrix that sold me on the bonuses of going solid state.

Now that is first class Canadian hospitality. If I lived in the area I certainly would visit and bring a nice present.
